Over Fed & Under Nourished.... Let Food Be Thy Medicine...

It’s been just over 18 months now since my personal physician told me to make some big changes in the way I eat or I’d probably die of a heart attack in 10 years.

To recap, I had just had a CTa; a 3-dimensional CAT scan of my heart so that a radiologist can check the condition of my heart’s blood vessels. By some grace of G-d, my cardiac vessels were in great shape; in-fact, they were in incredible shape. But, the problem was that my cholesterol was high, my triglycerides were high and my blood pressure was borderline. Not to mention, I was pushing the scales at just under 220lbs. So although my heart was in excellent shape, the cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure were setting me up for a hard fall in the not so distant future.

On a prescription pad Dr. Woolf wrote the name of a book: Ultrametabolism, by Mark Hyman, MD. My prescription was to read the book and to live the book…and so I did. The book in summary told me to eat whole foods, not processed foods. Told me not to skip meals or reduce my calories, but to eat the right foods at the right times to speed up my metabolism. And of course, get recommitted to exercising. All of which I did, and I did well.

It worked. After 6 months, my cholesterol, my triglycerides and my blood pressure were normal again and I weighed in at 194. To read more on out how I did this, read my blog on beating lipitor in 6 months

My struggle continues though as I’ve realized that crappy food is so abundant in our society, it’s nearly impossible to eat and snack healthfully (and tastefully) without examining the label on everything I want to purchase from the grocery store. Even Yogurt has high fructose corn syrup, the same sweetener as you will see in Coca-Cola & Pepsi and every other soda on the market and yes, another man-made substance that is slowly killing our children and ourselves. Most of the foods we consume also have hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils in them. A substance that is incredibly toxic to which scientists have said that this substance is like ingesting plastic into our bodies.

Most of you know how I felt when I stumbled onto Larabars. Which, I continue to enjoy to this day and hope to for a long long time; but, I’ve found another snack that can also be used as a meal!!!

Yes, I’ve finally found another source for not just in-between meal snack, but for real whole foods that you can replace any meal with. The Company is The Whole Food Farmacy. At a recent continuing educational seminar in Orlando, I bumped into an old schoolmate of mine. We talked and he actually had, in addition to his practice, another business that surrounded his incredibly healthy way of eating. Stephen, as I remember, would eat the entire fruit or vegetable. Stem, seeds, core, leaves and all. He left nothing over, and his business was based on healthy packaged meals made up of a multitude of whole fruits, whole vegetables whole seeds and whole grains that were in simple, easy to manage self-sealing very tasty packages. To my amazement, they tasted awesome and I immediately got as excited about this as I did when I first found out about Larabars.

Everything was packed kind of like a bag of “trail mix” and with incredible variety. I first tried something called Veggiliscious, which, I could easily chow down on in place of a bag of potato chips. They were crunchy and flavorful. There was even a spicy version too! There were so many choices from mixes of traditional fruits, seed & grains, to tropical fruits and various flavorful mixes. There were a multitude of shakes and soups as well, all made from a natural whole food source. The bags seal up like a zip-lock storage bag and they are so easy to throw in your gym bag or brief case or purse and take with you.

To put it like my California buddies…I was Stoked!!! I enjoyed the flavors, the whole food mixes were very hearty and I could easily eat one of these for a meal if I wanted. And, funny thing, I was going to and from so many classes and meeting, I actually ate 6 of my 8 meals that weekend from the Whole Food Farmacy and was totally satisfied. I simply didn't have time to sit down for a normal meal.

Now, this isn’t some fad diet, or new vitamin pill company, this company understands the benefits of whole food nutrition and packages it so it makes it easy for you to incorporate into your life. If you eat your meals from real whole foods, you will regain your health, you will lose weight and you will improve your health and recapture that long lost youthful energy again.

Top athletes are using this as part of the pre-competition preparation strategy. It’s becoming very popular with marathon runners and especially tri-athletes. Because it’s pure whole food the way we were meant to eat it. It’s just in a nice little bag.

If your kids need something good to snack on, this is absolutely the thing for you. If you’ve been wondering how to regain your health, lose that weight that somehow showed up around your waist one day, then this is for you. The Whole Food Farmacy has 7 & 13-day cleanses (some people call them fasts) to kick start your quest to regain your health. If you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss, give this a try. It’s not a “diet”, it’s not a “fast”, you’re just bombarding your system with a lot of very dense-high nutritional value whole foods. Your body will thank you for it by getting back in balance again.

It’s easy, it’s tasty and it’s extremely good for you. As with anything, check the ingredients to make sure you don’t have any allergies to the foods and if you have any questions, make sure to check with your doctor about it.

I’ve set up a website so you can check out the company’s products and if you think this is the right time to regain your health, then join the wholesale club like I did and join me in taking back your health and the health of your family. (It’s kind of like a Costco for their whole food products). Just go to: http://www.mywholefoodfarmacy.com/ and achieve your goals in your quest to regain your health.

So, as Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine said back in the “B.C.” days, “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food”.

Healthfully Yours,

Heart Health For The Holidays

Enjoy yourselves for the holidays and stay as "good" as you can. If you're not sure what's being server for dinner, eat before you go. I know there is a incredible amount of tempting foods, desserts and drinks out there this time of year and hey.....you deserve a little palate pleasure for working so hard this year.

But, as it often goes, what's good for the taste buds isn't typically great for your heart. So, I offer you this link to my nutrition mentor Dr. Mark Hyman's Blog about heart health.

It's simple. Read this easily numbered list of what to do and followit if you want to lower your weight, your cholesterol, your triglycerides and your blood pressure. But, take this one to heart. It only works if you actually do it.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas & Have a Wonderful New Year

1 Year Later, Still Missed

Well, today is the 1 year anniversary of the murder of Dr. Brad Timpf. A great sports chiropractor, a great friend, a great person. The day he was laid to rest, I wrote a heartfelt recap of my getting to know Brad and the brief time we shared as friends. You can read about it here

During the past year I had the chance to get to know Brad's Mom, Dad & Sister. All wonderful people; incredible people in fact. They continued to celebrate Brad's birthday and continue to this day to celebrate his life.

They have set up a scholarship in Brad's name and pursue the apprehension of of whomever robbed them of their loved one.

Brad & I strolled the halls of the same high school (JP Taravella)and pursued the same specialty within the same profession (Chiropractic Sports Medicine). I still feel the same way about Brad. In fact, everyone I know who is a "sports chiropractor" here in Florida misses him dearly.

I look forward to the day we get to watch some idiot fry in the electric chair and get sent to hell on a one-way ticket.
We Miss Ya Buddy.....

What's Good For Us Is Good For Them..

The 'us' is, well, you and me. The 'them' is our children.

What's the sense of having knowledge if we don't pass it on to our children. America is a fat society in many areas, but definitely around the belly.

So here we are, trying to either lose our excess weight, reduce our cholesterol, reduce our triglycerides, reduce our blood pressure, get rid of our cancers, reduce our cardiac risk, get our diabetes under control and we are completely selfish with our new found knowledge....

You know, through your journey to improve your health, you've learned some valuable things along the way, yet your children continue to eat that crap that they call food. Food filled with colorful dyes, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated (or partially hydrogenated) oils.

Remember that our children learn by imitating us. They will pick up all of our habits, the bad ones along with the good ones. Make sure you teach them what they put into their mouth isn't just to satisfy that hunger feeling, but it is fuel, it is medicine, it is building blocks, it is life energy for your body. If you put in bad stuff, you get back bad performance from your body. If you put in good stuff, you get back good performance.

So when you look at yourself in the mirror and you like what you see.....When you step onto that scale and you like the numbers that are coming up.....when you fit into your old clothes again and you like what you've done with yourself, ask yourself if you have passed any of your new found knowledge and experience on to your children. It's important.

Remember, their lives may depend on it.

No Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz??? What's Keeping You Up Late At Night????

That seems to be the age old question...What is keeping me up at night? I absolutely love a good night sleep. That is, when I can get one. There have been so many studies that show a link between poor sleep and disease as well as obesity. After 90 minutes of sleep, your pituitary gland releases growth hormone. Growth homrone is responsible for reparing & healing. As you age, you get less anyway, couple that with poor sleep and your....S.O.L.

So, what's the trick? Well, in trying to figure that one out myself, I came across this article and thought I'd pass it along.

Whether or not it's the night before the big game, the big meeting or just another important day at work, you need your sleep.

Spend a few minutes reading this and you will not only prolong your life, but you'll improve the quality of your life as well.

I wonder if a doctor would take their own medicine?

I wonder if a doctor would take their own medicine?

I was again confronted by my most irritating pet peeve today, thrice. twice from local chiropractors and the third from a local orthopedic surgeon.

Where doctors get off prescribing and performing treatments on patient without actually examining them I just don’t know. I mean, how the hell do you know what’s going on if you don’t touch your patient, if you don’t make them bend, tap their reflexes, perform basic neurological exam, vital signs, orthopedic tests or even take a good history?......?

For all you “laymen” out there, Joe Public who puts their trust in a doctor, you should know how it’s supposed to happen (for a musculoskeletal exam)..…

The doctor politely and without attitude, does a consultation and verbally takes your medical history and history of present illness. Based on that, he or she then…
  1. Takes your vitals. Height, Weight, Temperature, Blood Pressure, Check your Respirations, etc…Although unless I suspect something out of the ordinary, I typically don’t take BP or Resp. Then, basic neurological exam.
  2. Tap your reflexes, check your muscle strength, check your skin sensitivity and then just for kicks, make sure pathological reflexes are absent.
  3. Have the patient demonstrate basic range of motion of the part of parts involved.
Perform actual orthopedic tests of the area involved and any related areas.
  4. Arrive at a differential diagnosis
  5. Make recommendations for further diagnostic evaluations or consultations to help the doctor confirm his or her suspicions as to any of the more serious diagnosis
  6. Prescribe a regimen of treatment based on the above.
  7. Revisit the diagnosis and revise the treatment plan per the results of the diagnostic evaluations or outside specialist consultations.
  8. Treat the patient accordingly until a noticeable change in their condition, then revise the treatment plan along the way if necessary.
  9. If no change in their condition occurs, then refer them for another outside consult, even within the same specialty for a second opinion.
  • Are x-rays necessary? Sometimes.
  • Are MRIs necessary? Sometimes.
  • Are neurological tests such as NCVs, SSEP, EMGs necessary? Sometimes.

When are these diagnostic exam necessary? When the results of which are going to confirm your diagnosis for something possibly serious or change your treatment plan.

Unfortunately, many of these diagnostic tests and procedures have become a crutch for many physicians who would rather be lazy and rely solely on the MRI (or other test) for their diagnosis rather than using them to confirm what their exam told them.

Bottom line; If your doctor isn’t examining you and begins treatment, find another one. After all, you’re the one paying and you deserve it.
Afterall, just like politicians, your doctor is your employee. Don't let them forget it or you'll hire a new one.

The Whole Grain Scam

Don't get me wrong, eating whole grains is
E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-Y healthy for you. This isn't the scam. What is a scam is all of the packaging out there tricking you into believing you're actually eating whole grains. Therein "lies" the true scam. Follow along with me for a moment and you'll see...

In order for something to be a real "whole grain", the grain itself still has to be (at least)mostly intact. You see, it's the outer shell of the whole grain that gives a whole grain its "timed release" properties. Why is this important?

It's important because the slower the release of the CHOs (carbohydrates), the slower of a "blood sugar" rush you get. It's that fast blood sugar rush that causes you to feel tired or have that afternoon "crash" right after lunch. Commonly, it's refined carbohydrates (CHOs) that are the culprit for the afternoon crash.

This is the same reason a diabetic can eat an orange, but can't have orange juice. It's that fiberous outer shell or as I said earlier, that time release capsule that does the trick. The outer shell being called the "Bran".

And it's that time release capsule effect of the bran that is one of the most important parts to this whole grain issue. Now, all parts are important, but in order to have the effect of a slow digestion and uptake of CHOs, it's the whole grain's protective BRAN shell that does the trick.

...And Now, The Scam...

As I 've said in earlier blog posts: READ THE INGREDIENTS, not just the packaging. Packaging labels twist the truth and take things out of context as a normal practice. Ingredient lists have much less wiggle room when it come to the truth. So your best chance to know what's actually in the package is by reading the list of ingredients.

If your whole grains have been ground into flour, then it's not whole grain anymore. They smashed the hell out of the whole grain pulverizing into a powder we know as flour. Sure, it does some good. But not as much as we have been led to believe. There is some fiber in there, but it's not protecting the CHOs as nature intended. For our purposes, consider the stuff inside the protective shell "sugar". Because that is what it is converted into. In order to control the sugar inside the grain, you need a protective shell. As I said above, the protective shell is called the bran.

And yes, whole wheat flour is almost as bad as white flour. That's why when companies like General Mills, Peperidge Farms, Nature's Own, Wonder and others like them are advertising that their breakfast cereals & breaks are a good source of whole grains, it's extremely misleading. Yes, the flour in those products was once a whole grain, but its not anymore. You don't have to believe me either, just read their own label on their own box, bag or carton.

It's no different for pastas, bagels, English Muffins or "Bran Muffins". They aren't whole grain, just for the most part, whole grain flour. I recently read on a Thomas' English Muffin "Whole Wheat" English Muffins that not only wasn't it make from whole grains, the sweetener in the English Muffins was high fructose corn syrup. Read the ingredient list, not the packaging labels. Don't be fooled, don't be scammed. A flour that came from a whole grain source is not the same as eating the whole grain itself. The body handles them very differently.

So it's important to eat foods that have the protective outer shell intact. This way the sugars within get absorbed very slowly. When this happens, this is what we call eating good carbs.

Carbs aren't bad for you; in fact, they're good for you, very good for you and your body needs them. But they have to be eaten the right way, and that is as an intact whole grain.

There are a few companies out there that make breads, wraps and pastas from true whole grains. Ezekiel breads and pastas are one of them. Right on the package it says "100% Flourless". Their web site is: http://www.foodforlife.com/. Eat a sandwich with Ezekiel breaks and don't feel guilty about it. And they taste like normal breads too, just much more hearty. Their pastas and tortilla wraps are great too. But if you're trying to convert yourself from a Wonder Bread family to Ezekiel breads and wraps, it will take a little while to get use to. I wasn't raised on Wonder Bread as my mother would only allow whole wheat bread in the house.

So, don't get scammed by the myth of packing slogans and sayings. If it is a whole grain product, with the Bran shell protecting the inner carbs, then it will say whole grain wheat, whole grain oats, whole grain wheat, whole grain barley, whole grain "whatever" in the ingredient list.

If it's a scam, it will simply say "whole wheat flour" (or whole whole grain _____ flour). And when you read that all that goodness has been smashed, mashed, pulverized, ground up and powdered into a flour....simply put it down and move your grocery cart far - far away.

You can find Ezekiel's breads in the freezer section of Wild Oats, Bread of Life and down here in Florida, even Publix has them. Wild Oats & Bread of Life actually carry their pastas & wraps and Publix "healthy section" has the Ezekiel breakfast cereals.

Don't just read the packing, don't just read the labels; turn over the package and read the ingredient list and save yourself from the Whole Grain Scam purveyed by these big food corporations. I applaud them for trying, but, trying just isn't enough. Give us real food because the truth is simply posted on the back of your products and I'm teaching everyone how to read them!!!

'nuff said.

Healthfully yours
