A Better Back: 8 hours of ice therapy or 3 hours of moist heat therapy right at your desk!

Patient compliance. Can be a big a problem for a physician, trainer or therapist. I’m sure ALL of my doctor and therapist friends out there can Identify with this:

Doctor: Based on my examination findings, you’re
going to have to apply (ice compresses –or- moist heat) to your back and neck to
help reduce spasms, inflammation and pain. You’ll need to do this 15-20 minutes
at least 3 times per day for the next 2 weeks…

Patient: But..but I have to work, I don’t have
time or have a way to use (ice or heat) at work. I won’t be able to do that.

Doctor: Well, that’s my recommendation, and it's your body. You’re going to need to find a way. Isn’t there a lunch room at work where you can keep an ice pack?

It’s a constant battle for a doctor or therapist to get a patient to comply with some simple home instructions like applying ice or heat to help them get better. Until now, you had to rely on the freezer or microwave at work…IF there actually is one. But now, thanks to A Better Back, you can have an amazing ice pack that will last 6-8 hours or moist heating pad that will last up to 3 hours in your office to help sooth your aches and pains. All packaged nicely in a sharp looking comfortable ultra suede microfiber back pack.

When I first saw this and realized that I could have 8 hours of ice available WITHOUT A FREEZER, I was amazed. I mean, think of all the uses for this. Especially for athletes or anyone who does physical labor out in the Hot Florida Sun!!! I bike for 1-2 hours on Saturday and/or Sunday. With this ice pack I can go for an extended bike ride and keep relatively cool. For those who work in the cold, imagine strapping on a heating pad that keeps your warm for 2-3 hours at a time.
No more can patients tell us that they can’t apply ice or heat to their conditions because they are at work all day or they’re going on a long road trip. A Better Back changed the game and made a nice, convenient way for our patients to apply ice and heat throughout the day without having to immediately recharge the ice or heat right after use.

Freeze the ice pack and you have 6-8 hours of cold. Microwave the hot pack for just 3 minutes and you get 3 hours of moist heat. Now, I'm no Billy Mays, but if you have aches and pains and your doctor or therapist told you to apply ice or apply heat...You need A Better Back. You can visit their web site, and check it out for yourself…
All for just 1-easy payment www.ABetterBack.com
Enjoy…And tell them Dr. Narson sent you

So, how do we have a happy life? what are the keys? what are the secrets?

Well, they're quite simple. And...David Romanelli sums it up nicely in just a few short paragraphs in his brief report on a 72-year old study on happiness.

Holding Yourself Accountable for Your Nutrition & Exercise

If you truly want to be healthy, hold yourself accountable.

You may want to lose weight and get healthy because “you’re doing it for your kids”, you mother or father keeps hassling you about it, your spouse is getting on your case, people make fun of you or maybe your doctor told you it’s time to get serious about taking care of your health. Whatever the reason, none of it, and I mean NONE of it will have any effect on you until you truly want it for yourself. Typically, the only outside influence that really works is a near death experience or coming home from your doctor with truly bad news. So, the motivation must come from within.

My biggest obstacles with my health challenges are holding myself accountable. Anyone that knows me knows I love to eat. I love flavor, I love fun and I love to fill up. When I’m hanging out with my friends, we like to eat and enjoy things Big Time. So, I have to make sure I fill up on flavorful foods that are healthful for me. But as much as my conscious mind wants to do it, those little food demons inside my head keep trying to push me towards the dark side. Maybe this happens to you too. So, I need to take it to the next level. I need to step up my game when it comes to keeping myself on track.

I’ve found that for me, it’s easier to stay on purpose with my eating and exercise if I’m reading and learning about it. There’s always new science, new articles and new technology, but I can’t be reading and learning 24-7-365…so what is my alternative?

The best way to hold yourself accountable for your eating and your exercise is to start a journal. Go to the local store, purchase one of those black & white writing tablets and start keeping track of what you eat, when you eat it, how much you ate and how it was prepared. Also write down what exercise you’ve done for the day and continue this daily.

If you write things down in your “health journal” or “weight loss journal” you’ll be holding yourself accountable and you will make better choices because, well, you don’t want to disappoint yourself and have to write something bad in your journal.

So, take your health to the next level and journal your meals and your exercise. Holding yourself accountable just may be the motivation you need to stick with it this time and be successful. Summer is here and I know you want to look and feel good in that bathing suit….

ADHD Drug Warning....and Chiropractic as an Alternative? Yep, That's What She Said

As I've said, more and more the benefits of chiropractic care are coming to light.

At 2:25 into this video, you'll see Dr. Jennifer Ashton say that chiropractic care can be beneficial with some children suffering with ADHD. More and more, we're seeing that chiropractic can help with more than just neck and back pain....

Hey Doc...It Hurts When I do This...

Sport Specific Exams & Treatment; Is Your Doctor/Therapist Stuck in the Old Paradigm?

Remember the old joke…. A man goes to his doctor and says “hey doc, it hurts when I do this”…. The doctor looks back at him and says “well, then don’t do that”…
While I’ve been involved in sports medicine for at least the past 18 years, I seem to be always fighting those non-sports medicine doctors who love to tell patients to rest. I’ve always told a patient to rest the injured part or the injured motion, but be active or exercise everything else. The sports physician-trainer-therapists’s mantra Never Take An Athlete Out Of Exercise. Which is why “cross-training” was developed. Injured athletes would be given exercises that would help them with other aspects of their primary sport while their injury was healing. Out of season athletes would take on an in season sport with skill sets that could help them with their primary sport until it was back in season.

In the “old days” open heart surgery patients would lay in their hospital beds for weeks following surgery, nowadays, they are up and walking within a few days. You see our bodies were meant to move. We were built for action and action is what we need.

So nowadays, instead of your doctor giving you the answer “well, don’t do that” the smart doctor, trainer or therapist should say “do that again and let me watch you”. The functional exam is all about examining the patient in the position of pain, the activity of pain and even providing some treatment while the patient goes through these dysfunctional or painful activities .

It’s not so much that your body part is hurt and injured, it’s more the function that involves that part and how the "system" functions (or not) that includes that injured body part. Because more and more we’re understanding how interrelated body structures are involved in functions were never new before, just addressing “fixing the part” isn’t good enough. Nowadays you should get a more active exam and more active treatment to go along with it. Yes, passive therapies have their place, but if you are going to your doctor and saying “Doc, it hurts when I do this…” The doctor should do more than prescribe some pills or apply a hot pack and some muscle stimulation. In our office you'll see us treating patients (although it looks more like we're playing around) while they's balancing on gym balls, wobble discs, holding weights, squatting, standing on one leg, standing on a vibration plate, making throwing motions and more. The exam and the treatment depend on their injury, what causes their pain and what sport (or job) they are trying to do that causes their pain.

Here's an example of me working on a goes foot while he's in a position of provokation and function. He's on a motorized wobble board while I'm using my Graston Technique® tools him. The techniques are FAKTR-PM
video

For those unfamiliar with this, one great system of evaluating and treating musculoskeletal pain is FAKTR-PM)Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation, Provocation and Motion). If your doctor doesn’t know about FAKTR-PM, you can either refer them to www.FAKTR-PM.com to learn more or send them to someone (like me) who has been trained in Graston Technique® and/or FAKTR-PM for a more functional and effective approach to treating those everyday aches and pains or those sports injuries that keep coming back season after season.
