Many people I’ve run into in the past 2 weeks have commented to me personally on this Mayonnaise thing. I've posted a few responses. I never knew Mayonnaise excited so many people. It seems like most people out there really love mayonnaise but are afraid of it because it contains lots of fat. That’s exactly my point. It contains a lot of fat.
Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat. Ooooh that awful stuff. Right?
So, why did I ask why mayonnaise is bad for you?
Because it’s not.
Not all fats are bad for you.
If you eliminate all fat from your diet, you will die. Your body needs fats, but, it needs the right ones.
Years ago, people stayed away from nuts & Avocados for the same reason. They contain fat. But science has shown for quite a while that the fat contained in nuts (specifically Almonds, Walnuts) and the fat in Avocados are very good for you. I’m here today to tell you the same is true for the fat in mayonnaise.
Now, let me state my case:
I typically use Duke’s Mayo (which doesn’t have added sugar) or Hain’s Safflower Mayo, but here’s the ingredient list for Hellman’s since it’s the most popular:
Soybean Oil
Water
Whole Eggs & Egg Yolks
Vinegar
Salt
Sugar
Lemon Juice
Natural Flavors
Calcium Disodium EDTA
So that’s it. But everyone focuses on the egg yolk. “there’s soooooo much fat and cholesterol in the yolk”. Rather than have a long draw out discussion, let me point you towards a great article on egg yolks and their nutritional value and say this; too much of anything will eventually kill you. Drink too much water, and you can dilute your electrolytes to the point where your heart will stop. There is more benefit to egg-yolks than people are being led to believe. Whole eggs should be a part of your diet. Throw out the egg yolks and you throw out valuable nutrients & those all important Omegas too! Read this article and you will understand how much good stuff is packed into those little yellow mounds. Then you can make a smart decision for yourself.
Personally, I recommend eggs from free range chickens as they have a higher content of Omegas and lower saturated fat. Omega eggs are even better for you as they contain even more Omegas and less saturated fat.
So, the only real argument about Mayo is about the egg yolk. Soybean oil isn’t bad, the other ingredients aren’t bad either.
So, let’s put this in perspective and consider the ingredients along with the “nutritional info”….
…..Specifically, the “Fat Content” because that is the foundation for all of the paranoia.
Total Cholesterol – 10 grams
Saturated Fat 1.5 grams (The Bad Fat)
Trans Fat 0 grams (The Really-Really Bad Fat)
Monounsaturated Fat 2.5 grams
Polyunsaturated Fat 6 grams
This Mayonnaise thing is really a lesson on good fats-bad fats.
Since there are no trans fats in regular mayo. Trans fats being the worst kind of fat you can put in your body. The only bad fat in there is saturated fat. There is only 1.5 grams of saturated fat.
This leaves 8.5 grams of Mono & Poly Unsaturated Fat. THEREFORE: THE MAJORITY OF THE FAT IN MAYONNAISE ARE GOOD FATS.
Now, how about we compare healthful Avocados to Regular Mayo:
(Hellman’s) Mayo:........1.5 Grams of Saturated vs 8.5 grams of Mono/Poly Unsaturated Fat.
Avocados:.......................4 grams of Saturated Fat & 17 grams of Mono & Poly Unsaturated Fat
With the government finally throwing out that disastrous 1st USDA Food Pyramid that caused more heart disease and strokes than any other piece of wrong advice ever given; we know that certain fats are extremely beneficial to our health and necessary for life.
Let’s do some simple math and double the serving on Mayo and compare it to Avocados:
1.5 x 2 = 3 grams Saturated Fat
8.5 grams x 2 = 17 grams of Mono/Poly unsaturated fat.
So, like Avocados, the majority of fat contained in Mayonnaise is good – healthful fats.
Therefore, I’m going to tell you that, like Avocados & Raw Nuts, Mayonnaise is actually good for you. There, I've said it.....Mayo is actually good for you.
I’ll give you 1 specific case example – Me.
I started out my journey September 1, 2006 with a cholesterol level of 290. (Ouch. Yes, I know).
6 months later my cholesterol is 195 and my triglycerides were down to normal as well. During this time, my diet included Mayonnaise, Whole (Omega) Eggs & about 2-4 ounces of raw Almonds per day. I would also include 4 tablespoons of Udo’s 3-6-9 Omega Oil Blend daily. 2 in the morning, 2 before bed.
The numbers don’t lie and the science backs me up. Good fats are necessary for your total health and the majority of fat in mayo is good for you. Practically the same ration as in Avocados, with regular Mayo getting the 'nod' for less saturated fat.
I still think gobs and gobs of Mayo is disgusting. You know you've put too much mayo on your sandwich when you squeeze your sandwich and the meat flies out the back; So, again, moderation is key, but don't be afraid of the mayo.
Now, don’t go out and start cramming down the mayo-Avocado and Raw Almond porridge. My personal “regain my health” program was very well rounded in all areas including regular exercise.
But, on weekly bases my diet did include: Avocados, Raw Nuts, whole eggs and yes, Mayonnaise. And I didn’t skimp either.
I also include a lot of fresh fruits & veggies as well as good lean meats (Turkey, Chicken & Fish)
Don’t be afraid.
It’s good for you.
So there’s no mistake about it….Here’s the deal with Fats:
Mono-unsaturated Fat – GOOD
Poly-unsaturated Fat – GOOD
Saturated Fat – BAD
Trans Fats – VERY VERY VERY VERY FREAKIN’ BAD
On all labels: Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated Oil = Trans Fats.
Scientists now equate Trans Fats to digesting plastic.
They have no place in the human body.
If you are a parent, I bet that 90% of everything your kid eats has Trans Fats in them.
They will kill your child.
On average, today's children will live 3-5 years less than their parents because of the horrible crap in foods nowadays.
Read those labels.
Enjoy good fats & put some (regular) mayo on that sandwich!
Don’t be afraid.

Great first couple of paragraphs - I didn't finish it as I have to go out and get some mayo!
Thanks for the life changing info.
I'm having chicken salad tonight!

My local paper had a health columnist who wrote: "Throw out the mayo and use a lemon to moisten your yummy salad." Moisten? Just shoot me now. Thanks, doctor, for bringing us back to reality. I now have a better understanding of the fats outlined on food labels (two are good, two are bad). Much appreciated!
