Agave Nectar...Is This The Latest Health Scam?

If you read no further, here's the bottom line: Agave Nectar Contains More Synthesized Fructose than High Fructose Corn Syrup

Funny, I fell for the PR/Marketing hype of the product too. I guess I really wanted to believe that there was a good, fun, normal tasting and healthier substitute. After I read an article on the processing of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), I realized that Agave Nectar has the same % Fructose to Glucose as HFCS I started to become suspicious about Agave Nectar being a healthier alternative sweetener. Turns out my suspicious were correct and this stuff is just a different form of processed fructose and just as evil as HFCS (and table sugar for that matter).

To read more, follow this link to the Weston A Price foundation article and get all the gory details for yourself.

But for now, if you want something sweet, get the sugary sweetness in it's original package....Fruit.

But it looks like processed sugar is processed sugar...and once you take sugar out of its natural form, the body doesn't handle it so well.

'nuff said.

Vegans typically use agave to replace honey which they feel exploits bees since vegans will not eat anything that has a mother. Macrobiotics choose their sweeteners for health-inspired reasons and so use barley malt, brown rice syrup, and as a last resort - maple syrup. Why do vegans eschew these healthier choices for agave? A quick google search suggests that agave is cheaper and tasteless while some of the above mentioned sweeteners are more expensive and have strong flavors. These same editorials also tout the health benefits they believe they receive from the use of agave.

That interesting Marian, But Honey doesn't exploit bees. The only problem with most honey is it is heated to the point it kills all the beneficial nutrients and is basically a honey flavored goo. Raw Honey is the only way to go. Outside of that, stevia or just eat some fruit.

But honey doesn't come from a mother bee or queen bee, it comes from the worker bees doing their job. The vegans need to rethink their theory.

Bottom line, Agave Nectar is as bad as table sugar and HFCS.

Agave nectar is bad for you. It’s not traditional, not natural, highly refined, and contains more concentrated fructose than high fructose corn syrup.
