Heart Health For The Holidays

Enjoy yourselves for the holidays and stay as "good" as you can. If you're not sure what's being server for dinner, eat before you go. I know there is a incredible amount of tempting foods, desserts and drinks out there this time of year and hey.....you deserve a little palate pleasure for working so hard this year.

But, as it often goes, what's good for the taste buds isn't typically great for your heart. So, I offer you this link to my nutrition mentor Dr. Mark Hyman's Blog about heart health.

It's simple. Read this easily numbered list of what to do and followit if you want to lower your weight, your cholesterol, your triglycerides and your blood pressure. But, take this one to heart. It only works if you actually do it.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas & Have a Wonderful New Year

1 Year Later, Still Missed

Well, today is the 1 year anniversary of the murder of Dr. Brad Timpf. A great sports chiropractor, a great friend, a great person. The day he was laid to rest, I wrote a heartfelt recap of my getting to know Brad and the brief time we shared as friends. You can read about it here

During the past year I had the chance to get to know Brad's Mom, Dad & Sister. All wonderful people; incredible people in fact. They continued to celebrate Brad's birthday and continue to this day to celebrate his life.

They have set up a scholarship in Brad's name and pursue the apprehension of of whomever robbed them of their loved one.

Brad & I strolled the halls of the same high school (JP Taravella)and pursued the same specialty within the same profession (Chiropractic Sports Medicine). I still feel the same way about Brad. In fact, everyone I know who is a "sports chiropractor" here in Florida misses him dearly.

I look forward to the day we get to watch some idiot fry in the electric chair and get sent to hell on a one-way ticket.
We Miss Ya Buddy.....

What's Good For Us Is Good For Them..

The 'us' is, well, you and me. The 'them' is our children.

What's the sense of having knowledge if we don't pass it on to our children. America is a fat society in many areas, but definitely around the belly.

So here we are, trying to either lose our excess weight, reduce our cholesterol, reduce our triglycerides, reduce our blood pressure, get rid of our cancers, reduce our cardiac risk, get our diabetes under control and we are completely selfish with our new found knowledge....

You know, through your journey to improve your health, you've learned some valuable things along the way, yet your children continue to eat that crap that they call food. Food filled with colorful dyes, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated (or partially hydrogenated) oils.

Remember that our children learn by imitating us. They will pick up all of our habits, the bad ones along with the good ones. Make sure you teach them what they put into their mouth isn't just to satisfy that hunger feeling, but it is fuel, it is medicine, it is building blocks, it is life energy for your body. If you put in bad stuff, you get back bad performance from your body. If you put in good stuff, you get back good performance.

So when you look at yourself in the mirror and you like what you see.....When you step onto that scale and you like the numbers that are coming up.....when you fit into your old clothes again and you like what you've done with yourself, ask yourself if you have passed any of your new found knowledge and experience on to your children. It's important.

Remember, their lives may depend on it.

No Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz??? What's Keeping You Up Late At Night????

That seems to be the age old question...What is keeping me up at night? I absolutely love a good night sleep. That is, when I can get one. There have been so many studies that show a link between poor sleep and disease as well as obesity. After 90 minutes of sleep, your pituitary gland releases growth hormone. Growth homrone is responsible for reparing & healing. As you age, you get less anyway, couple that with poor sleep and your....S.O.L.

So, what's the trick? Well, in trying to figure that one out myself, I came across this article and thought I'd pass it along.

Whether or not it's the night before the big game, the big meeting or just another important day at work, you need your sleep.

Spend a few minutes reading this and you will not only prolong your life, but you'll improve the quality of your life as well.

I wonder if a doctor would take their own medicine?

I wonder if a doctor would take their own medicine?

I was again confronted by my most irritating pet peeve today, thrice. twice from local chiropractors and the third from a local orthopedic surgeon.

Where doctors get off prescribing and performing treatments on patient without actually examining them I just don’t know. I mean, how the hell do you know what’s going on if you don’t touch your patient, if you don’t make them bend, tap their reflexes, perform basic neurological exam, vital signs, orthopedic tests or even take a good history?......?

For all you “laymen” out there, Joe Public who puts their trust in a doctor, you should know how it’s supposed to happen (for a musculoskeletal exam)..…

The doctor politely and without attitude, does a consultation and verbally takes your medical history and history of present illness. Based on that, he or she then…
  1. Takes your vitals. Height, Weight, Temperature, Blood Pressure, Check your Respirations, etc…Although unless I suspect something out of the ordinary, I typically don’t take BP or Resp. Then, basic neurological exam.
  2. Tap your reflexes, check your muscle strength, check your skin sensitivity and then just for kicks, make sure pathological reflexes are absent.
  3. Have the patient demonstrate basic range of motion of the part of parts involved.
Perform actual orthopedic tests of the area involved and any related areas.
  4. Arrive at a differential diagnosis
  5. Make recommendations for further diagnostic evaluations or consultations to help the doctor confirm his or her suspicions as to any of the more serious diagnosis
  6. Prescribe a regimen of treatment based on the above.
  7. Revisit the diagnosis and revise the treatment plan per the results of the diagnostic evaluations or outside specialist consultations.
  8. Treat the patient accordingly until a noticeable change in their condition, then revise the treatment plan along the way if necessary.
  9. If no change in their condition occurs, then refer them for another outside consult, even within the same specialty for a second opinion.
  • Are x-rays necessary? Sometimes.
  • Are MRIs necessary? Sometimes.
  • Are neurological tests such as NCVs, SSEP, EMGs necessary? Sometimes.

When are these diagnostic exam necessary? When the results of which are going to confirm your diagnosis for something possibly serious or change your treatment plan.

Unfortunately, many of these diagnostic tests and procedures have become a crutch for many physicians who would rather be lazy and rely solely on the MRI (or other test) for their diagnosis rather than using them to confirm what their exam told them.

Bottom line; If your doctor isn’t examining you and begins treatment, find another one. After all, you’re the one paying and you deserve it.
Afterall, just like politicians, your doctor is your employee. Don't let them forget it or you'll hire a new one.

The Whole Grain Scam

Don't get me wrong, eating whole grains is
E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-Y healthy for you. This isn't the scam. What is a scam is all of the packaging out there tricking you into believing you're actually eating whole grains. Therein "lies" the true scam. Follow along with me for a moment and you'll see...

In order for something to be a real "whole grain", the grain itself still has to be (at least)mostly intact. You see, it's the outer shell of the whole grain that gives a whole grain its "timed release" properties. Why is this important?

It's important because the slower the release of the CHOs (carbohydrates), the slower of a "blood sugar" rush you get. It's that fast blood sugar rush that causes you to feel tired or have that afternoon "crash" right after lunch. Commonly, it's refined carbohydrates (CHOs) that are the culprit for the afternoon crash.

This is the same reason a diabetic can eat an orange, but can't have orange juice. It's that fiberous outer shell or as I said earlier, that time release capsule that does the trick. The outer shell being called the "Bran".

And it's that time release capsule effect of the bran that is one of the most important parts to this whole grain issue. Now, all parts are important, but in order to have the effect of a slow digestion and uptake of CHOs, it's the whole grain's protective BRAN shell that does the trick.

...And Now, The Scam...

As I 've said in earlier blog posts: READ THE INGREDIENTS, not just the packaging. Packaging labels twist the truth and take things out of context as a normal practice. Ingredient lists have much less wiggle room when it come to the truth. So your best chance to know what's actually in the package is by reading the list of ingredients.

If your whole grains have been ground into flour, then it's not whole grain anymore. They smashed the hell out of the whole grain pulverizing into a powder we know as flour. Sure, it does some good. But not as much as we have been led to believe. There is some fiber in there, but it's not protecting the CHOs as nature intended. For our purposes, consider the stuff inside the protective shell "sugar". Because that is what it is converted into. In order to control the sugar inside the grain, you need a protective shell. As I said above, the protective shell is called the bran.

And yes, whole wheat flour is almost as bad as white flour. That's why when companies like General Mills, Peperidge Farms, Nature's Own, Wonder and others like them are advertising that their breakfast cereals & breaks are a good source of whole grains, it's extremely misleading. Yes, the flour in those products was once a whole grain, but its not anymore. You don't have to believe me either, just read their own label on their own box, bag or carton.

It's no different for pastas, bagels, English Muffins or "Bran Muffins". They aren't whole grain, just for the most part, whole grain flour. I recently read on a Thomas' English Muffin "Whole Wheat" English Muffins that not only wasn't it make from whole grains, the sweetener in the English Muffins was high fructose corn syrup. Read the ingredient list, not the packaging labels. Don't be fooled, don't be scammed. A flour that came from a whole grain source is not the same as eating the whole grain itself. The body handles them very differently.

So it's important to eat foods that have the protective outer shell intact. This way the sugars within get absorbed very slowly. When this happens, this is what we call eating good carbs.

Carbs aren't bad for you; in fact, they're good for you, very good for you and your body needs them. But they have to be eaten the right way, and that is as an intact whole grain.

There are a few companies out there that make breads, wraps and pastas from true whole grains. Ezekiel breads and pastas are one of them. Right on the package it says "100% Flourless". Their web site is: http://www.foodforlife.com/. Eat a sandwich with Ezekiel breaks and don't feel guilty about it. And they taste like normal breads too, just much more hearty. Their pastas and tortilla wraps are great too. But if you're trying to convert yourself from a Wonder Bread family to Ezekiel breads and wraps, it will take a little while to get use to. I wasn't raised on Wonder Bread as my mother would only allow whole wheat bread in the house.

So, don't get scammed by the myth of packing slogans and sayings. If it is a whole grain product, with the Bran shell protecting the inner carbs, then it will say whole grain wheat, whole grain oats, whole grain wheat, whole grain barley, whole grain "whatever" in the ingredient list.

If it's a scam, it will simply say "whole wheat flour" (or whole whole grain _____ flour). And when you read that all that goodness has been smashed, mashed, pulverized, ground up and powdered into a flour....simply put it down and move your grocery cart far - far away.

You can find Ezekiel's breads in the freezer section of Wild Oats, Bread of Life and down here in Florida, even Publix has them. Wild Oats & Bread of Life actually carry their pastas & wraps and Publix "healthy section" has the Ezekiel breakfast cereals.

Don't just read the packing, don't just read the labels; turn over the package and read the ingredient list and save yourself from the Whole Grain Scam purveyed by these big food corporations. I applaud them for trying, but, trying just isn't enough. Give us real food because the truth is simply posted on the back of your products and I'm teaching everyone how to read them!!!

'nuff said.

Healthfully yours

Drink Soda - Get Diabetes! Recent Study Shows the Relationship Between High Fructose Corn Syrup & Diabetes

Forget the fact that it has been written about in various health and diet books for the last several years, but a recent study find a link between the consumption of high fructose corn syrup and diabetes.

The study was done linking the high fructose corn syrup (aka: HFCS) in common everyday sodas. But here's the problem with the stinking thinking of the day. You'll read or hear about excerpts of this study and stop your children, your spouse and yourself from drinking soda. But, over the past 30 years, HFCS has become the sweetener of choice FOR EVERYTHING!

Don't believe me? Go back my December of 2006 blog post Is Yogurt As Bad As Soda? Do you think it ends there? Nope! Go to your local grocery store and start reading the labels of:

1) The juice boxes & juice bags you buy your kids for their school lunch.
2) Most cranberry juice & other juices
3) Yogurt
4) For you Soy addicts - Tofutti Ice Cream
5) Most grocery store breads, yes, even including "whole wheat" breads
6) Most candies, cookies and sweet snacks (which also contain hydrogenated oils)
7) Most alcoholic drink mixers (check that bottle of sweet stuff mix with your alcohol)
8) Salad dressings
9) Most Ketchup
10) Most children's breakfast cereals
12) Hot Cocoa Mixes & Chocolate Milk Mixes
13) Gatoraide & Poweraide
14) and much much more...

The reason many of you are diabetic and pre-diabetic is because you can't get away from this un-natural man-made horrible crappy cheap as hell artificial sweetener. It should NEVER be consumed by humans (the same as hydrogenated oils should never be consumed). The only reason they put it in our food (well, in your foods because I don't eat anything with HFCS) is because it is very inexpensive to produce as compared to real sugar and therefore it makes for bigger corporate profits. Big business makes more money, we get sick and die.

Our bodies were never meant to consume it, therefore it will harm you, and eventually it will kill you. And....it will kill you ever so slowly. Apparently, diabetes is its murder weapon.

I love when science proves me right.

Again.

So, Here's To Your Health (Raising a glass of pure water)

Over Fed & Under Nourished....Let Food Be Your Medicine and Take Back Your Health

It’s been just over 18 months now since my personal physician told me to make some big changes in the way I eat or I’d probably die of a heart attack in 10 years.

To recap, I had just had a CTa; a 3-dimensional CAT scan of my heart so that a radiologist can check the condition of my heart’s blood vessels. By some grace of G-d, my cardiac vessels were in great shape; in-fact, they were in incredible shape. But, the problem was that my cholesterol was high, my triglycerides were high and my blood pressure was borderline. Not to mention, I was pushing the scales at just under 220lbs. So although my heart was in excellent shape, the cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure were setting me up for a hard fall in the not so distant future.

On a prescription pad Dr. Woolf wrote the name of a book: Ultrametabolism, by Mark Hyman, MD. My prescription was to read the book and to live the book…and so I did. The book in summary told me to eat whole foods, not processed foods. Told me not to skip meals or reduce my calories, but to eat the right foods at the right times to speed up my metabolism. And of course, get recommitted to exercising. All of which I did, and I did well.

It worked. After 6 months, my cholesterol, my triglycerides and my blood pressure were normal again and I weighed in at 194. To read more on out how I did this, read my blog on beating lipitor in 6 months

My struggle continues though as I’ve realized that crappy food is so abundant in our society, it’s nearly impossible to eat and snack healthfully (and tastefully) without examining the label on everything I want to purchase from the grocery store. Even Yogurt has high fructose corn syrup, the same sweetener as you will see in Coca-Cola & Pepsi and every other soda on the market and yes, another man-made substance that is slowly killing our children and ourselves. Most of the foods we consume also have hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils in them. A substance that is incredibly toxic to which scientists have said that this substance is like ingesting plastic into our bodies.

Most of you know how I felt when I stumbled onto Larabars. Which, I continue to enjoy to this day and hope to for a long long time; but, I’ve found another snack that can also be used as a meal!!!

Yes, I’ve finally found another source for not just in-between meal snack, but for real whole foods that you can replace any meal with. The Company is The Whole Food Farmacy. At a recent continuing educational seminar in Orlando, I bumped into an old schoolmate of mine. We talked and he actually had, in addition to his practice, another business that surrounded his incredibly healthy way of eating. Stephen, as I remember, would eat the entire fruit or vegetable. Stem, seeds, core, leaves and all. He left nothing over, and his business was based on healthy packaged meals made up of a multitude of whole fruits, whole vegetables whole seeds and whole grains that were in simple, easy to manage self-sealing very tasty packages. To my amazement, they tasted awesome and I immediately got as excited about this as I did when I first found out about Larabars.

Everything was packed kind of like a bag of “trail mix” and with incredible variety. I first tried something called Veggiliscious, which, I could easily chow down on in place of a bag of potato chips. They were crunchy and flavorful. There was even a spicy version too! There were so many choices from mixes of traditional fruits, seed & grains, to tropical fruits and various flavorful mixes. There were a multitude of shakes and soups as well, all made from a natural whole food source. The bags seal up like a zip-lock storage bag and they are so easy to throw in your gym bag or brief case or purse and take with you.

To put it like my California buddies…I was Stoked!!! I enjoyed the flavors, the whole food mixes were very hearty and I could easily eat one of these for a meal if I wanted. And, funny thing, I was going to and from so many classes and meeting, I actually ate 6 of my 8 meals that weekend from the Whole Food Farmacy and was totally satisfied. I simply didn't have time to sit down for a normal meal.

Now, this isn’t some fad diet, or new vitamin pill company, this company understands the benefits of whole food nutrition and packages it so it makes it easy for you to incorporate into your life. If you eat your meals from real whole foods, you will regain your health, you will lose weight and you will improve your health and recapture that long lost youthful energy again.

Top athletes are using this as part of the pre-competition preparation strategy. It’s becoming very popular with marathon runners and especially tri-athletes. Because it’s pure whole food the way we were meant to eat it. It’s just in a nice little bag.

If your kids need something good to snack on, this is absolutely the thing for you. If you’ve been wondering how to regain your health, lose that weight that somehow showed up around your waist one day, then this is for you. The Whole Food Farmacy has 13-day cleanses to kick start your quest to regain your health. If you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss, give this a try. It’s not a “diet”, it’s not a “fast”, you’re just bombarding your system with a lot of very dense-high nutritional value whole foods. Your body will thank you for it by getting back in balance again.

It’s easy, it’s tasty and it’s extremely good for you. As with anything, check the ingredients to make sure you don’t have any allergies to the foods and if you have any questions, make sure to check with your doctor about it.

I’ve set up a website so you can check out the company’s products and if you think this is the right time to regain your health, then join the wholesale club like I did and joint me in taking back your health and the health of your family. (It’s kind of like a Costco for their whole food products). Just go to: http://www.mywholefoodfarmacy.com/ and achieve your goals in your quest to regain your health.

So, as Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine said back in the “B.C.” days, “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food”.

Healthfully Yours,

DocT

Personal Space.....

Being a sports chiropractor I have the opportunity to meet people who are the stars of their sports fairly often. As I have been practicing now for 16+ years, I have seen people develop from "Am" to Pro-Am level, and into the stars they are today. It's always wonderful and exciting to meet someone new who is a "big deal" in the world of sports and this past weekend was no different.

But I'm amazed how the general public treats these people. It's like they are some type of commodity; like they have some right to invade their privacy without permission. I understand being a public figure opens you up to this to a degree, but, where is the line? Where has the general respect we should have for one and another gone?
Over the many years my wife and I have been in practice we have had the opportunity to work with some very very big name people but I promise you that you will never ever see a picture of them on our wall. Movie stars, top athletes from pro sports teams, actors, actresses, musicians, movie producers, huge heads of well known public companies, politicians etc...I could go on. Yet, you would never know it.

Some other patients who've been in the office at the time when these stars have been there know, they smile, they giggle, they are proud to be under the care of the same doctor, but it's not my place to tell or show it off. As a matter of fact, under Federal HIPPA privacy laws, it's illegal for me to do so. But even before those laws, I respected their privacy. That's just how I am.

This weekend I had the opportunity to meet the tennis champion Martina Navratilova. She was introduced to me by 2 mutual friends while in Orlando. Martina is as sweet as they come. She was wonderful to have a conversation with and just a "real" person. I had the chance to spend a little time with my friends Joanne & Val to catch up and during this time, people would come over, some politely, others not, and ask Martina for an autograph and a photo. She was gracious with the autographs but she (very) politely asked one particular person not to take a photo (as she was in the middle of eating). And they did anyway. I thought it was totally rude. She couldn't have been nicer to this putz. She graciously gave him her autograph but he wanted more. What an ass!

I have very good friends who are the chiropractors for the NFL, MLB or NBA team in their city. My brother-in-law David is the sports chiropractor for the PGA and has been for years. They don't go bragging. They don't pester people for autographs and pictures. They respect the privacy of these folks and just enjoy the opportunity to have worked with them. My G-d son's father was the chiropractor at the Torino Winter Olympics and he's as humble as they come (extremely excited, yet humble...when he got picked, I heard the scream all the way from Pinecrest to Miami Beach). A real professional and a real role model all of them.

So, if you are a member of the general public or a fellow health care professional, let's all be cool. Stop pestering these people and just enjoy the fact that you spent some time with them. If there is a connection, you'll eventually develop a friendship. After all, having a relationship with someone of this stature is much more valuable than having that cheesy snap-shot anyway.

If you really want a picture of Martina why don't you visit her new web site at: http://www.martinanavratilova.com/
If you really want to get to know someone like Martina, then get to know her passions and get involved with the charitable organizations she gets involved with herself.

If you want to strive to be a champion, then learn from the champion herself with her new fitness book. And, I'm sure that if you happen to be taking a stroll one day and see Martina and asked her to sign your copy of Shape Your Self, she would do it with a smile.

This is how you get to know someone. Not just a tennis champion, but anyone. If you are into creating valuable relationships in your life and enhancing the lives of those around you; try getting involved and giving first. Rather than creating a negative situation and being just another "taker" in life.
So, go ahead and take that cheesy snap shot. That's all you'll ever have. I on the other hand, had a nice conversation with Martina and her partner and found out what nice-wonderful people they are. I'll have that memory forever. You, whoever you are, have your cheesy 1.3 mega-pixel cellphone snapshot which you'll have until you drop your phone in the toilet the next time you tinkle...Whoops.
Ethics & Professionalism always matter.

Natural Pain Relief For Chronic Aches & Pains

Well, there are many wonderful natural treatments available to those in chronic pain. Most people are sick and tired of taking medications that make them feel nausious, light-headed or sleepy. So if you know someone in chronic pain, and it's ruining their life, forward them this nice little piece on 14-Natural Pain Relievers

To get a little more high tech and closer to home, I'd have to add Therapeutic Laser and of course chiropractic adjustments to the list (Would be #1 & 2 if I wrote the original list). Chiropractic adjustments help restore spinal and peripheral joints (shoulder, elbows, wrists, fingers, knees, ankle and toes) back to normal movement patterns and, as a result of returning the joints to their proper working order, neurologic pain receptors in the joints are turned off causing a relief of pain. Laser Therapy has a whole host of incredible benefits that you can read more about in my earlier blog post on Laser Therapy

I loved some of the suggestions in this article though. And, if you or a friend has been in chronic pain, I know they' will be willing to ry just about anything, including baking cookies.

Try them and let me know if you found them useful.

Stretching: Is It Good Or Bad? You Decide

I've been looking for this for a while now. I get questions about stretching and exercise all of the time. "Doc, should I stretch before I workout, after I work out or what?".... For those other "docs", therapists and trainers out there, I'm sure you get queried the same as do I.

So, I dug back into my old computer files on a hard drive that has been taken out of service. Brushed off the dust and cob webs and found this from an August 2004 report. Let's see if this doesn't change your mind about pre-exercise or pre-competition stretching....Enjoy.

By the way, the info is out of Medicine and Sports & Exercise, a peer reviewed journal, and the commentary that followed is by Warren T. Jahn, DC, MPS, FACO, DACBSP, DABFPBoard Certified Chiropractic Orthopedist, Sports Physician & Forensic Examiner. Warren, thank you for all the work you do for our profession. It's guys and gals like you that make me proud.

Aug. 20, 2004 — Stretching impairs balance and worsens reaction and movement times, according to the results of a controlled study published in the August issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. This could be problematic for elite athletes as well as for the elderly.

"Stretching is commonly utilized to increase the range of motion around the joint and theorized to improve athletic performance," write David G. Behm, PhD, from the Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, and colleagues. "A number of studies report that acute and prolonged stretching may actually reduce human performance through decreases in force and power."
To investigate the effect of acute lower-limb static stretching on balance, proprioception, reaction, and movement time, 16 subjects were tested before and after both a static stretching of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and plantar flexors or a control condition of similar duration. Five minutes of cycle warm-up preceded both the stretch and control conditions. In the stretch condition, subjects performed three 45-second stretches to the point of discomfort with 15-second rest periods for each muscle group. Outcomes included maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) force of the leg extensors, static balance measured with a computerized wobble board, dominant lower-limb reaction and movement times, and the ability to match 30% and 50% MVC forces with and without visual feedback.

In the stretch and control conditions, decreases in MVC and ability to match submaximal forces were similar. Compared with the control condition, however, balance scores were worse in the stretch condition (9.2% vs 17.3%; P < .009). The stretch condition also resulted in prolonged reaction time (increase of +4.0% vs decrease of -5.8% for control) and movement time (+1.9% vs -5.7%; P < .01).

"It appears that an acute bout of stretching impaired the warm-up effect achieved under control conditions with balance and reaction/movement time," the authors write. "A warm-up consisting of general and specific activities related to the tasks may improve performance even after 20 minutes of recovery. Considering the minute differences between winning and losing in both individual and team sports as well as the precarious balance or stability of the elderly, the low but significant percentage changes in reaction time, movement time, and balance could result in serious consequences."
Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2004;36:1397-1402

Clinical Context: Stretching has been used to improve range of motion around joints and theorized to improve athletic performance. However, recent studies have not substantiated this claim. For example, Fowles and colleagues reported in the September 2000 issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology that stretching of a single muscle group for 15 to 30 minutes led to decreases in force and power attributable to impairments in neural output and changes in the musculo-tendinous unit (MTU). A more compliant MTU could alter reaction and movement times. Stretch-induced changes to either the afferent limb muscle responses or the mechanical output would affect the ability to adapt to stability changes, ie, balance.
The authors of this study postulated that even minor changes in reaction and movement times and balance associated with stretching could have important implications for athletic performance and rehabilitation. Instead of prolonged stretching of a single muscle group, as used in previous studies, the authors used an acute bout of static stretching on three lower-limb muscle groups to determine impact on reaction and movement times, balance, and strength in healthy male subjects.

Study Highlights:
16 healthy male subjects, mean age 24 years, weight 71 kg, and height 172 cm were selected to have pretest and posttest measurements before and after two interventions (stretching vs no stretching). Both interventions included a preintervention warm-up cycle of 5 minutes at 70 rpm on a cycle ergometer, submaximal and maximal leg extension contractions, 3 trials of rapid leg movement, and balance on a wobble board.

The active stretching intervention consisted of 3 stretches for 45 seconds each to the point of discomfort with 15-second rest periods for the quadriceps, hamstrings, and plantar flexors. The stretching lasted approximately 20 minutes in total.

The control intervention consisted of 20 minutes of rest. Pretesting and posttesting (each lasting 20 minutes) were conducted to measure the outcomes of (a) MVC force of the leg extensors, (b) static balance using a computerized wobble board, (c) movement and reaction times of the dominant lower limb, and (d) ability to match 30% and 50% MVC forces with and without visual feedback.

Day-to-day and test-retest reliability for the measurements ranged from 0.60 to 0.89. There was no significant difference in force output between the stretch and control interventions, with 6.9% and 5.6% decrement in force for the two interventions, respectively. There were no significant differences in the ability to match 30% and 50% MVC between the stretch and control interventions during the pretest and posttest. The control intervention resulted in a nonsignificant 18.8% and 10.7% greater accuracy for maintaining 30% and 50% MVC posttest.

Balance scores moved in opposite directions with the control intervention showing a significant improvement posttest (17.3% improvement; P < .05) and the stretch intervention showing a nonsignificant 2.2% decrease in balance score after stretching. The difference between the 2 interventions was significant at P < .009.

There were reverse trends for movement and reaction times for the two interventions. In the control group, both movement and reaction times improved posttest (5.8%; P = .16 for reaction time and 5.7%; P = .18 for movement time), whereas for the stretch intervention, movement and reaction times were nonsignificantly impaired by 4.0% and 1.9% poststretch, respectively.

Pearls for Practice:

  • Inserting a stretching routine within a rest period of a warm-up nullifies a small benefit in movement and reaction times and balance performance.
  • Stretching to the point of discomfort can adversely affect performance tests of static balance and movement and reaction times in healthy males.

Heartbrun Anyone???

About a year ago I had an incident with heart burn. Not your usual heart burn, but a pretty weird incident and heartburn was involved.

I passed out. Yep, I passed out. There I was in my office on a very busy afternoon. I stopped in my office to slug a couple gulps of a Pepsi-One (the only Pepsi sweetened with Splenda). Well, have you ever had a hard swallow? You know, you drink something and it feels like you're swallowing a baseball and it just gets stuck in your chest. Well, it was one of those. Except, it was this fizzed up Pepsi-One. Well, it was so intense that I had a vaso-vagal reaction. Apparently my blood pressure went up so high, my body reacted in the opposite direction, lowered my pressure and I passed out.

The strange thing, I was clutching my chest because of the rock-like feeling from gulping down the Pepsi-One and my poor wife was watching all of this thinking I had a heart attack.

Well, I got my physician on the phone after I came too and he asked me if I had been having heart burn recently. I had. It had been happening for about a week. He said to take some antacids to help reduce the heartbrun and Of course being a strong proponent of "natural health and healing" I resisted, but eventually followed his advice.

I searched around on the internet to find any natural cures for heartburn. What really pissed me off was that ever time I though I found some good information, it lead me to a paypal screen to pay the person for access to his or her information. That pissed me off. Why? Because I spend all day, all week helping people. Whether or not they pay me, ask me in the street or at a party, I give them whatever knowledge I can offer...because it's the right thing to do. I don't ask them to drop a $50 into my wife's purse on their way out of the party.

So, I recently came across a simple little method of managing heart burn that is as easy as chewing gum. As a matter of fact, it's exactly chewing gum.

I found the article at http://www.health.com/ and if you want to read the original source, you can go there. Or, to make it easier on you, just read the paragraph below. Oh, besides chewing gum, rather than eating 3 large meals per day, try eating 6 smaller meals and that will help as well. Of course, if you do suffer with heartburn, try these things with your doctors blessing...

From www.Health.com

Gum for heartburn. Heartburn happens when stomach acids splash back into the esophagus and burn it. Treatment often includes antacids that reduce the amount of acid. But British researchers recently confirmed U.S. studies showing that chewing gum after a meal helps fight heartburn. Chewing gum increases saliva, which helps wash the acid back down to the stomach, the researchers say. The type of gum doesn’t matter, but the latest research used sugar-free—and it’s easier on your teeth. If you try it: Chew for at least 30 minutes after eating.

Follow-Up: I almost forgot, what happened in the incident above was an esophageal spasm. But, honestly, if you've never had a heart attack and was wondering what it was like, I think this was pretty damn close. It was a change of not only diet, but how much and when I ate that prevented this again. Smaller, more frequent meals and cut out the crapola foods. If you want to know more, check out my earlier post on my major diet makover. Here's the link

Good luck....

Pain: Is It A Real Problem?

I could have easily named this post: The deception of pain.

There is no doubt that pain hurts. That’s why we call it pain. But pain itself can be deceiving. Why? Because pain is normal. Yes, I said pain is normal. How can that be you ask? Simple. Pain is a normal function of your body that indicates when something is wrong.

Pain itself isn’t a problem. Don’t get me wrong, pain sucks. Pain can cause you to “have problems” but pain itself simply just hurts. From the most devastating pain to the most mild. The pain can be so severe that it prevents you from being able to perform the most basic daily activities, or so mild that it goes away when you occupy your mind with another though.

Pain, however, is an indicator. Pain is a sign and should be thought of more like an alarm rather than anything else.

I like to use the analogy of a smoke detector. It’s not a fire detector, it’s a smoke detector and as the saying goes, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. So one night you are awakened by the smoke detector shrieking it’s annoyingly and purposefully loud whine waking you and your family up. At that point, you have 2 choices

[1]Get up, pull the batteries out of the alarm and go back to sleep.
[2]Get up, get your family out of the house and call the fire department on your way out.

Which one sounds like the more rational and responsible thing to do? Which one makes more sense. Which one is common sense and which one is just plain stupid?

I won’t even glorify that with an answer. I know which one you’d choose.

Now think of it in the context of pain.

You wake up due to a terribly severe pain in your lower back. You stumble out of bed and you reach for the aspirin (salicylic acid), Advil (ibuprofen), Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Aleve (Naproxen Sulfate)….You take the recommended dose on the bottle and attempt to get back to sleep. You eventually get back to sleep and you wake up the next morning, problem averted. Right?

Wrong.

I would ask you why did you have this tremendous pain that woke you up in the middle of the night? The first things that come to my mind are (1) Cancer (2) Kidney Stones (3) Abdominal Aortic Aneurism (4) Herniated Disc…and there are more.

· Why? Because all 4 can cause you to experience low back pain.

Most likely, it's a simple mechanical lower back pain. But, you never know do you?

Now you go ahead and take that aspirin, or Aleve, or Tylenol, or Advil, or Motrin or whatever. Maybe you don’t even take one of those. Maybe you rub on one of those muscle pain relieving creams into your back to get rid of your aches and pains.

Think they are benign? Think they are harmless? Read this article about a girl who died using a simple muscle cream. Why did she use so much? Why did she use it so often? What else was going on? Why did she have the pains in the first place? This young athlete could have gone so far had she not ignored the signal from her body telling her she needs to go get checked.

So, what are the muscle rubs, the aspirin or the “whatever” doing? They are covering up the pain so you aren’t inconvenienced.

The one you maybe inconveniencing maybe yourself. What it your little ache or pain was indicating an important condition in its early stage. Everytime it alerts you, you ignore it with some OTC (over the counter) pain killer. Eventually, the problem spreads and by the time you realize it's serious, it may be too late for your doctor to help you. Still think it's convenient?

Once I can understand, maybe even twice. But after that, you better get in to see a health care professional and find out why…WHY are you having pain?

The reason could be simple and insignificant. The reason could be complex or very serious. But see pain for what it is: an alarm system that is trying to tell you that you may have a problem. Pain is an alarm, not a condition. Treat it as such.

Or, you can simply pull the batteries out of the alarm and go back to sleep. So just take that pain killer or rub on that cream so you can ignore your alarm.

But didn’t you already say to yourself that that was the stupid decision?

And how is this important to you athletes out there? Well, if your feeling pain, it means somethings not working the way it should. Regardless if you take something to cover up the pain, somethings just not 100%....and for you, it could make that 1/10 of a second difference between the silver or gold medal. So stop the muscle rubs, stop the OTC pain meds and go get checked. It could be the difference between winning or losing or simply between life and death.

Hitting the Wall - Exercise Burnout & How To Deal With It

Interestingly enough, if you exercise too much and for too long your body will bite back. You’ve always heard that too much of a good thing is bad for you. For the most part, it really doesn’t matter what it is.

I’ve had patients who exercise every day without giving themselves a break. Eventually, all to often find themselves having one small pesky injury after another and they actually start to regress in their performance. Their training suffers, their performance suffers, they get slower, weaker and then the on slot of injuries begins. The strain themselves with simple little tasks.

In the world of sports medicine, it’s called “hitting the wall” or commonly “exercise burnout.

Yes, you can exercise too much. Remember during exercise, you break down tissues in order for the tissues to build back up better-stronger-faster-etc…. But, if you don’t give your body the time to build back up, your headed down a slippery slope that will send you back where you came from.
Exercise burnout is a very important condition for sports physician and athletes to recognize.

I’d like you to take a break....take a deep breath and to direct you to some other sources for further background.

Avoiding Overuse Injuries & Exercise Burnout

Overtraining

Avoiding Burnout (in life & sports)

Healthfully yours,

Ice or Heat? Which One To Use First?

Let me get right to the point.

Ice First, Ask Questions Later.

This is what I tell my patients to do when they aren’t sure whether to use ice or heat when they re-injure themselves.

This is probably one of the most controversial things I come across in practice. It’s a very “old school – new school” thing. Most old timers like to apply heat on acute injuries or acute flair ups of chronic conditions. The reason is because they want to increase circulation to the area to rid it of the inflammation.

Here’s the problem. It’s inflamed. The root word of inflamed is “flame”, meaning heat. You never put heat on top of something already hot unless of course you want it to get hotter.

They don’t want their patients to apply ice because it constricts and restricts blood flow.

Unfortunately for them, the research in this area doesn’t support their practice.

However, ice on acute injuries is very well supported. Have you ever noticed that whe you put ice on for 15 minutes then take the ice pack off, your skin is pinkish-red. Why? Because your body was getting chilled down so much, that in a last-ditch effort not to get frost-bite, your body intuitively dilates your blood vessels to increase blood flow to warm up the area. Ahhhhh, we use a built in protective system to our advantage.

So there, ice will increase blood flow.

What about the 24, 48 or 72 hour thing?

It’s all “BS”. Use ice for as many days as you need until the inflammation and pain subsides or drastically changes for the better. I’ve used ice on myself and my patients up to 6 weeks depending on the condition. The same goes for acute flair ups of chronic conditions.

If it’s inflamed, use ice. If it hurts so much you want to go to the doctor or E.R., use ice.

Never put ice directly on your skin, always use at least a handkerchief, a cople layers of paper towel or a thin washcloth to protect your skin. I've seen people use it directly and get an ice burn on their skin. Not a pretty sight.

Remember, Ice First, Ask Questions Later. Especially with sports injuries.

Mayonnaise….Part II...Let The Truth Be Told

Many people I’ve run into in the past 2 weeks have commented to me personally on this Mayonnaise thing. I've posted a few responses. I never knew Mayonnaise excited so many people. It seems like most people out there really love mayonnaise but are afraid of it because it contains lots of fat. That’s exactly my point. It contains a lot of fat.

Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat Fat. Ooooh that awful stuff. Right?

So, why did I ask why mayonnaise is bad for you?

Because it’s not.

Not all fats are bad for you.

If you eliminate all fat from your diet, you will die. Your body needs fats, but, it needs the right ones.

Years ago, people stayed away from nuts & Avocados for the same reason. They contain fat. But science has shown for quite a while that the fat contained in nuts (specifically Almonds, Walnuts) and the fat in Avocados are very good for you. I’m here today to tell you the same is true for the fat in mayonnaise.

Now, let me state my case:

I typically use Duke’s Mayo (which doesn’t have added sugar) or Hain’s Safflower Mayo, but here’s the ingredient list for Hellman’s since it’s the most popular:

Soybean Oil
Water
Whole Eggs & Egg Yolks
Vinegar
Salt
Sugar
Lemon Juice
Natural Flavors
Calcium Disodium EDTA

So that’s it. But everyone focuses on the egg yolk. “there’s soooooo much fat and cholesterol in the yolk”. Rather than have a long draw out discussion, let me point you towards a great article on egg yolks and their nutritional value and say this; too much of anything will eventually kill you. Drink too much water, and you can dilute your electrolytes to the point where your heart will stop. There is more benefit to egg-yolks than people are being led to believe. Whole eggs should be a part of your diet. Throw out the egg yolks and you throw out valuable nutrients & those all important Omegas too! Read this article and you will understand how much good stuff is packed into those little yellow mounds. Then you can make a smart decision for yourself.

Personally, I recommend eggs from free range chickens as they have a higher content of Omegas and lower saturated fat. Omega eggs are even better for you as they contain even more Omegas and less saturated fat.

So, the only real argument about Mayo is about the egg yolk. Soybean oil isn’t bad, the other ingredients aren’t bad either.

So, let’s put this in perspective and consider the ingredients along with the “nutritional info”….

…..Specifically, the “Fat Content” because that is the foundation for all of the paranoia.

Total Cholesterol – 10 grams

Saturated Fat 1.5 grams (The Bad Fat)
Trans Fat 0 grams (The Really-Really Bad Fat)
Monounsaturated Fat 2.5 grams
Polyunsaturated Fat 6 grams

This Mayonnaise thing is really a lesson on good fats-bad fats.

Since there are no trans fats in regular mayo. Trans fats being the worst kind of fat you can put in your body. The only bad fat in there is saturated fat. There is only 1.5 grams of saturated fat.

This leaves 8.5 grams of Mono & Poly Unsaturated Fat. THEREFORE: THE MAJORITY OF THE FAT IN MAYONNAISE ARE GOOD FATS.
Now, how about we compare healthful Avocados to Regular Mayo:

(Hellman’s) Mayo:........1.5 Grams of Saturated vs 8.5 grams of Mono/Poly Unsaturated Fat.

Avocados:.......................4 grams of Saturated Fat & 17 grams of Mono & Poly Unsaturated Fat

With the government finally throwing out that disastrous 1st USDA Food Pyramid that caused more heart disease and strokes than any other piece of wrong advice ever given; we know that certain fats are extremely beneficial to our health and necessary for life.

Let’s do some simple math and double the serving on Mayo and compare it to Avocados:

1.5 x 2 = 3 grams Saturated Fat
8.5 grams x 2 = 17 grams of Mono/Poly unsaturated fat.

So, like Avocados, the majority of fat contained in Mayonnaise is good – healthful fats.

Therefore, I’m going to tell you that, like Avocados & Raw Nuts, Mayonnaise is actually good for you. There, I've said it.....Mayo is actually good for you.

I’ll give you 1 specific case example – Me.

I started out my journey September 1, 2006 with a cholesterol level of 290. (Ouch. Yes, I know).

6 months later my cholesterol is 195 and my triglycerides were down to normal as well. During this time, my diet included Mayonnaise, Whole (Omega) Eggs & about 2-4 ounces of raw Almonds per day. I would also include 4 tablespoons of Udo’s 3-6-9 Omega Oil Blend daily. 2 in the morning, 2 before bed.

The numbers don’t lie and the science backs me up. Good fats are necessary for your total health and the majority of fat in mayo is good for you. Practically the same ration as in Avocados, with regular Mayo getting the 'nod' for less saturated fat.

I still think gobs and gobs of Mayo is disgusting. You know you've put too much mayo on your sandwich when you squeeze your sandwich and the meat flies out the back; So, again, moderation is key, but don't be afraid of the mayo.

Now, don’t go out and start cramming down the mayo-Avocado and Raw Almond porridge. My personal “regain my health” program was very well rounded in all areas including regular exercise.

But, on weekly bases my diet did include: Avocados, Raw Nuts, whole eggs and yes, Mayonnaise. And I didn’t skimp either.
I also include a lot of fresh fruits & veggies as well as good lean meats (Turkey, Chicken & Fish)

Don’t be afraid.

It’s good for you.

So there’s no mistake about it….Here’s the deal with Fats:

Mono-unsaturated Fat – GOOD
Poly-unsaturated Fat – GOOD
Saturated Fat – BAD
Trans Fats – VERY VERY VERY VERY FREAKIN’ BAD

On all labels: Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated Oil = Trans Fats.

Scientists now equate Trans Fats to digesting plastic.

They have no place in the human body.
If you are a parent, I bet that 90% of everything your kid eats has Trans Fats in them.
They will kill your child.
On average, today's children will live 3-5 years less than their parents because of the horrible crap in foods nowadays.

Read those labels.

Enjoy good fats & put some (regular) mayo on that sandwich!

Don’t be afraid.

Well, Mayo has it's issues. The original versions all center around a base of eggyolks and vegetable oil. For a country bent on consuming their weight in saturated fats and cholesterol on a daily basis, this certainly isn't the best foundation. Add to that any chemical preservatives they throw in, and Voila! Heart Attack with a side of stroke. Now, you have to consider that with moderation, there isn't anything too horrible about Mayo. But moderation is not something that the majority of the population possess. Worse, a lot of people use mayo to "fatten up" what was once a healthy choice. There are always flip sides, but it's sort of like chocolate. Chocolate has benefits, chocolate is ok in moderation. People generally do not appropriately moderate their chocolate, and what is BAD about chocolate overtakes what is good. It's the same with Mayo. So, it's easier to say it's evil than it is to tell people to knock off their blinders and take responsibility for how they utilize it.I do admit that I use some fat free mayo on occasion - but it's rarely (I'm not a huge fan, on a personal level - not fitness.)
