Attention Fellow Chiropractors - It's time to forget the "old school", read this and finally understand Why What You Do Works...

This is reprinted from Dynamic Chiropractic Magazine and once you understand it, proves to be a really powerful article and should provoke the desire to learn more. Many of our chiropractic brethren continue to cling to the old chiropractic vitalistic theories and fail to keep their eyes open for the actual physiology behind how and why chiropractic works. There's no question that chiropractic works....and it works beutifully at that, BUT the question is why does it work?

Read this article by one of the great minds of our profession and you'll begin to understand.

Subluxation and the Nervous SystemBy David Seaman, DC, MS, DABCN

Subluxation remains a topic of heated contention, as does its relationship to the nervous system. Some still view the subluxation as a "bone out of place" that is returned to its proper position with an adjustment. That this view persists is somewhat surprising when we consider that back in 1967, Len Faye first introduced the dynamic subluxation complex to his students at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, in Bournemouth, England, and then to us here in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Faye described the subluxation complex as a joint that hypomobility, myopathological changes in spinal musculature, histopathology of spinal structures, inflammation, and related neurological dysfunction termed "neuropathophysiology."

Joint Complex Innervation
To understand the neuropathophysiology of subluxation, we need to be aware of the innervation of the spinal joint complex. Nociceptors and mechanoreceptors are the primary sensory receptors that innervate joint structures, including synovia, joint capsules, bone, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and blood vessels. The predominant receptor is the nociceptor. More than 90 percent of joint innervation is nociceptive, originally determined by animal studies,1 then confirmed in studies with human spinal joint capsules. (2) In short, there is a paucity of mechanoreceptor innervation of the joint capsule, and an abundance of nociceptive innervation, which should seemingly lead our profession to dig deeply into the nature of nociception. There seems to be less nociceptive innervation of muscles; we have about an equal balance of nociceptive and mechanoreceptive receptors, (3) which means that nociceptive innervation of muscles is still significant.

Clearly, the afferent innervation of the spinal joint complex favors nociceptive receptors. At this point, readers should appreciate that nociceptors are not pain receptors and that nociception does not equate with pain. This misinterpretation is common throughout the extent of health care professions, as texts such as Guyton's Physiology use "pain receptor" and "nociceptor" interchangeably.

Different nerve fiber types are associated with nociceptors and mechanoreceptors, and nerve fibers are classified in two fashions. There is an alphabetical classification, which includes A, B, and C fibers that correspond to both afferent and efferent fibers. There is also a Roman numeral classification system, reserved exclusively for afferent fibers, designated as group I, II, III, and IV fibers, afferents, or units. These classification systems tend to make comprehending the nature of nerve fibers more difficult than it should be.

The best way to view this is from the perspective of fiber size. Generally speaking, there are A-alpha, A-beta, A-gamma, A-delta, B and C fibers, differentiated by their size, with A-alpha the largest and the C fibers being the smallest. Depending on their place of origin, A, B and C fibers can be afferent or efferent. Nociceptive afferents, for example, are either A-delta or C fibers; when these fibers leave peripheral tissues with which to travel to the spinal cord, we know that they are nociceptive. So far, so good, right?

The confusion often begins when the overlap between the alphabetical and numerical system is presented. All we need to know at this point is that A-delta afferents equate to group III units, and C fibers equate to group IV units. Practically speaking, this means that joints are predominately innervated by A-delta/group I fibers and C/group IV fibers. Actually, C-fibers/group IV units are the predominant afferent fibers that leave joints.
When we consider joint innervation for the purpose of understanding the neurology of subluxation, we need to know that C-fibers or group IV afferents are the primary nerve fibers that innervate spinal joints. Stated again, joints are innervated predominantly by C-fibers/group IV afferents.

Compared with nociceptors, significantly fewer mechanoreceptive afferents leave our joints. A-alpha fibers equate with Group Ia and Ib afferents, while A-beta fibers equate to group II units. Significantly more group I and group II units innervate muscle compared to joints.
This heavy concentration of nociceptive fibers in joints suggests that we are basically built to experience joint pain, which bears itself clinically when we consider that most people experience back or neck pain during their lives. Whenever asked why back pain is so common, we should state the simple truth: our spinal joints are densely populated with nerve receptors that sense tissue injury and inflammation, i.e., nociceptors.

Subluxation Neurology
The above description of fiber types can be found in most anatomy, neurology and physiology texts. What we don't read in such texts is that spinal dysfunction/subluxation will influence the activity of the various fiber types. Nociceptors are activated by tissue injury and the chemical mediators that cause inflammation, while mechanoreceptors are stimulated by normal movements. Accordingly, spinal injury is likely to increase the firing of nociceptors however, the activity of mechanoreceptors is likely to be reduced because with injury, inflammation, nociception and pain, there will be less movement afforded to the injured joint and therefore, less mechanoreceptor activation. The outcome of this pattern of receptor activity associated with the subluxation complex will be discussed in future columns. Suffice it to say that increased nociception and reduced mechanoreception can cause pain, visceral symptoms, problems with motor control and proprioception, or no symptoms at all. (4) The important point to appreciate now is that the subluxation complex will alter the firing of spinal tissue nociceptors and mechanoreceptors, and this will lead to various symptoms that we often encounter in the clinical setting that respond to chiropractic care. So, when we think about subluxation, the subluxation complex, or joint dysfunction, we need to think about receptors and afferent fibers.

Although the spinal nerve travels through the intervertebral foramen, it is rare for a bone-on-nerve subluxation to occur. There has to be significant facet hypertrophy or disc collapse, not a common encounter in clinical practice; perhaps 1 percent of the population with back pain suffer with this problem.(5) When such neurocompression does exist, surgery and/or heavy medication is often the choice of care.

What makes the bone-on-nerve subluxation popular is that we can visualize the spinal nerve in books and cadaver specimens; however, we cannot see nociceptors or mechanoreceptors. For us humans, it is far easier to believe something that we see, compared with something that is invisible to the naked eye. Despite this tendency, we must understand that spinal joints and muscles have a massive nociceptive and mechanoreceptive innervation pattern that is profoundly influenced by the subluxation complex. While not visible, they are the reason patients come to our offices.

Tiger Woods: Who's At Fault???

As a physician that takes care of athletes I felt I needed to weigh in on this issue of Tiger Woods, the car crash and the infidelity with his wife.

The media's money line continues to be about his "fall from grace as a role model". Well, he hasn't fallen from grace with me as a role model because for me, I only looked towards Tiger as a role model for my golf game. And, for my golf game, he remains the best role model on planet Earth.

It was nice to think he was so clean cut, neat, tidy and beyond reproach in other aspects of his life. That would have made for the whole package. But whose fault is it if we as citizens and especially we as parents to help our children choose their role models specifically for the achievements they've made and not for their entire existence.

I love sports medicine because I love competition, I love sports and it helps me stay connected with my younger years as an athlete. Sometimes I marvel in what athletes can do, the time and dedication they put into their sport, but that's typically where it ends.

My role model for my marriage are two sets of people that I've known for quite a long time. My parents and my grandparents. I've seen my parents go through relationship ups and downs and now they are in their 45Th year. My grandparents were married for 64 1/2 years until my grandpa Ben died when he was 90. My grandmother just passed earlier this year at 99. But nearly 65 years of a solid relationship. Wow, that's to be admired and modeled.

I use my parents and grandparent as role models for marriage and parenting along with some others. Neither my dad or grandfather played golf, so I think I'll stick with advice from Tiger about my swing.

Be we as people, as parents...and those of you in traditional media must stop putting sports figures and entertainers on these high pedestals. They may be good at their chosen craft, but it doesn't make them role models for all aspects of life. I don't think anyone is.

Babe Ruth was great with a baseball bat. But I don't take advice living a clean life from his life's example. However "The Babe" was extremely generous when it came to orphaned children and that is something people could learn from.

It's not the athlete that has to learn, it's us. Pick and choose your role models for their expertise, not in Toto. Otherwise, eventually, you'll be disappointed, but I won't.

I would hope people are more true to the people in their lives, but, hey...it's their life.

If Tiger chooses to take a Mulligan on this, I'm sure it will cost him dearly and I wish him the best in his personal life.

But I'll still be analyzing his swing and his golf game just the same because in the game of Golf, he's the best. But with relationships, I look to my grandparents, my parents and my wife.

Parents Overestimating Children's Level of Fitness

Every parent thinks their kid is the best, the brightest, the best looking and apparently the most physically fit. Unfortunately, the opposite is true (when it comes to the physically fit part).

Personally, computers & on-line gaming have our children living their lives inside a digital world rather than outside in the parks & fields playing ball, riding bikes and getting their exercise along with some good laughs.

But this short article based on a British Heart Foundation survey points out the needs for kids to get off their couches and parents to take more of an active roll.

There's no easy way to be a parent, you've got to just suck it up, put down your foot.....hopefully on the pedal of your bicycle.

High Fructose Corn Syrup At Whole Foods

Yes, you read that correctly. The other day I was having lunch at Whole Foods here in South Beach with my wife and a good friend & local Hypnotist Todd Goodwin (MiamiHypnosis.net) and Todd was telling me how you even have to read labels now becauseWhole Foods now has some items with High Fructose Corn Syrup. I was in total disbelief.
At that moment, we got up and went to the salad bar, him trying to prove a point, myself still in disbelief that Whole Foods would be this foolish. Low and behold, there it was...On the ingredient list for their middle eastern "Aramouni's Classic Carrot & Raisin" salad...High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I apologize for the picture quality, but this was the best I could get on my blackberry. Understandably so, Whole Foods didn't want me taking pictures with my nice Canon G10.
Unfortunately my friends, now even at Whole Foods, you must be careful and read the labels. On Everything!
Oh, and here's the best part. When we asked the guy putting the salad bar together about high fructose corn syrup being in this salad, salad bar guy spewed the same crap you hear on the Corn Refiner's of America TV commercial. "well, it's made from corn and corn is natural...right?"
Wrong! Here was my answer: The corn typically grown & used in the USA is a genetically modified strain of corn with a 13 carbon atom structure where original corn had 12 carbon atoms. Let's not forget that in order to get HFCS, the process takes 5 high pressure enzymatic process that eventually result in HFCS.
So let me ask the ultimate question....where in nature does High Fructose Corn Syrup grow?
Whole Foods, Shame On You.

Processed Foods Linked To Depression...

You could actually say: Process Foods Linked To (insert disease name here) and be accurate.

Funny, you read the headline and think this is earth shattering news. I read the headline and say: Wonder why it took 'em this long to figure it out. And then, they go on to say that a diet rich in fresh veggies, fruit and fish could prevent the onset of depression. Geniuses.

Let's not forget the fact that as a species, we (Homo Sapiens) have been eating fresh veggies, fruit, fish (and other naturally grazing/roaming meats) for....oh.....I'd say only a mere 100,000 to 1-million years. Who would have thought that if you made a staple out of highly processed-highly refined foods, fed yourself with it for a few years, no less a few decades, you'd get depressed or sick or develop disease.

When will the public & the researchers wake up??? I dare mention when will the government wake up, but we know they never will, unless there's a way they can tax it or line their own pockets from it. Unfortunately for them, if everyone started eating naturally grown fresh veggies, fruit and fish, 90% of the diseases in this country would go away and most of their pharmaceutical and farming industry would collapse and all those genius scientists and nutritionists would be the ones on the street corner begging for your spare change.....

Or maybe there will be a few job openings on an organic farm and they can find out that the truth has been there all along. Veggies, fruit and clean meats win again.

Athletic Body Care: Move Over Purell, There's A New Kid In Town

So, those alcohol gels like purell have been a usefull (and somewhat obsessive) tool up to now. But ever since the Obama Fist Bump & Swine Flu people are freakin-out about shaking someone else's hand. So, what does one do?

While in SanDiego California for the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians annual symposium, myself along with a privileged few other doctors traveled across town to the USA Judo tournament I found a sponsored vendor named Athletic Body Care. After speaking with them for a few minutes I realized that this was something I needed to keep in my sports medicine bag, at my office and probably a bottle in my car.

Athletic Body Care makes 3 products, a "hand sanitizer" type liquid, a "daily defense lotion" and a shower gel. What the heck, I bought all 3. The nice thing about this stuff is it kills microbes and its effectiveness doesn't wear off when it's dried up....it's effective at killing microbes for up to 1-hour.

So, if you're a sports medicine physician out in the field, networking at a business meeting or you're kids are going to a friends birthday party, you should consider arming yourself against the H1N1 or other "nasties" that travel via hand to hand, hand to doorknob or other nasty hand to ??? contact may be.

Check out Athletic Body Care's products at http://www.athleticbodycare.com/ They cost abot $10-12 bucks each. Well worth the price of protection.

The Medicine Of Our Future Is The Food Of Our Past

The more I read about health & nutrition the more I realize how simple it is to solve 80% of the medical problems we see in the USA.

Realizing that most if not all of our modern problems started compounding after the industrialization of our food.

Yes we had problems before, the black plague, yellow fever, etc. But most of those problems came about as cities started to flourish and a lot of people started living in close quarters with inadequate sanitary measures. The point is emphasized with the story of what was a beautiful 5-acre lake in Manhattan, NY, (yes, there 'was' a fresh water lake in Manhattan), but it's the story of that lake that makes the point that most disease prior to the industrialization of our food was from unsanitary conditions. Here's an excerpt from a NT Times article titled: The First Slum in America:

"It is an unvarying rule that wherever New Yorkers see trash, they will throw more of it. About 200 years ago, Lower Manhattan was adorned by a pretty five-acre lake known as the Collect. The first steamboat was tested there. Locals would gather to skate on its ice in the winter and picnic along its shores in the summer.By the mid-1700's, however, the Collect was already rimmed with slaughterhouses and tanneries. The effusions from these bloody businesses were poured directly into the lake and more industries, more trash, quickly followed. By 1800 the Collect was a reeking cesspool."

What it doesn't mention in the NY Times article is how the locals also used the lake to bathe themselves and wash their clothes in., adding to its filth. Oh, I almost forgot, this was the ONLY fresh water source on Manhttan island and the only source for drinking water...that makes me sick just thinking about it...

So, where is the lake now? Well, because of the filth, by 1813 the lake had been entirely filled in and by 1825 something entirely new stood on the site -- America's first real slum, the Five Points. (as the NY Times put it)

Think about all the epidemics prior to the industrialized food era. Just look back 8-10 generations ago. Flu's, plagues, fevers and infections. So we learned to cleanup. Medical doctors eventually figured out they need to wash their hands prior to surgery (and eventually gloves came along) and municipalities along with health officials figured out that having the horse droppings in the street was also unsanitary and spread disease. Now you know why grandpa was so insensed when he said to wipe the "$#!T" off your feet when you came into the house.

Since we've gone industrial, our food hardly resembles the stuff we (I'm talking about "we" our ancestors....great-great and great-great-great grandparents) use to eat. The more I read, the more I realize it's the food of our old cultures (think about the country where your family came from) that is healthful for us. Not the Standard American Diet (aka SAD) of Pizza, hamburgers, chips, candied breakfast cereals and soda of today. Not even the new era yogurts and much of the commercially available fruits and veggies are really healthful for us becasue of all the pesticides, herbicides, fungicides they absorb from the soils and what's sprayed on them as they grow.

We know from exercise that after only 6-8 weeks, our bodies start to noticeably adapt to the stresses and forces of the exercise. Do this for 3 years and you'll completely transform your musculoskeletal system(I'm still working on it...). Do it generation after generation for 3 million years and you'll transform your species.
As Humans, as homo sapiens we are a product of evolution. Never forget that. And as such, we are made to adapt to our environment. But our physiology, our genes takes not a thousand years to adapt and change but thousands of generations to adapt and change. We evolved to eat the foods of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.

According to Jay D. Mann PhD, We evolved over the course of 100,000 generations eating as hunter gatherers, 500 generations on agriculture, 10 generations on industrial foods and between 2-3 generations on fast-food. Suffice it to say that for a couple million years we've been hunting wild game, gathering veggies, fruits and catching wild fish and this was what we as a species evolved to eat.
Why are we as a society getting so sick with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, allergies, developmental problems and more.... Because we eat less like our ancestors and more like the commodity the industrial food and pharmaceutical companies want us to be.

Which is why I say, The Medicine of the Future is the Food of our Past.
What foods to eat? Start With:
4 Meats from Grass-fed / natural grazing animals that graze on the natural grasses of the pastures they roam
4 Free roaming poultry that eat their natural evolutionary diet of bugs, worms and whatever else they peck from the fields they roam in.
4 Wild fish (absolutely not farm raised fish)
4 Organic vegetables and fruit

And yes, it's safe and healthy to cook most of our foods(to a point), not every vegetable has to be eaten raw all the time. As in the case of Kale, cooking helps break it down and make it easier to digest and extract nutrients from and it's something we've been doing for only about 1.9 million years. So, to this too we are well adapted.

But don't ask me, just sit back and think about it for yourself for a while. Let's all use some comon sense. Humans have been around for such a long time eating a certain way and all of a sudden we radically change how we eat and wonder why so many people are fat and sick???

It's time to wake up and smell the fresh fruit, veggies and grass-fed meat.

Parents - Are Your Ready For High School Football & Wrestling?

Sports Chiropractor Miami Beach:
High School Football & Wrestling Athletes Suffer Highest Rate Of Severe Injuries
According to the first study to examine severe injuries, high school wrestlers and football players experience the highest rate of severe injuries that caused high school athletes to miss more than 21 days of sport participation among a nationally representative sample of high school athletes. Severe injuries accounted for 15 percent of all high school sport-related injuries.

According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine and by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) of the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, males experienced a higher rate of severe injuries.

"Twenty-nine percent of severe injuries occurred to the knee, making it the most commonly injured body site," explained the study's co-author Christy Collins, CIRP research associate at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "The ankle accounted for 12 percent followed by shoulder at 11 percent."

The most severe and common injury diagnoses were
·Fractures 36%
·Complete ligament sprains 15%
·Incomplete ligament sprains 14%

Commonly fractured body sites included
·The hand and finger 18%
·Ankle 14%
·Wrist 11%

Sports studied included football, boys' and girls' soccer, volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, and baseball and softball. Data for the study were collected from the 2005-2007 National High School Sports Injury Surveillance Study

Omega-3 Oils Rival The Effect of Anti-Depressant Medications

Miami Chiropractor, Chiropractor Miami, Chiropractor Miami Beach, Sports Medicine, Back Pain Miami Beach, Headaches, Neck Pain, Todd Narson, Corey Narson, Alton Road Chiropractor

Much if not most of what ails us can be traced back to our diet. Here's a nice article featured on Dr. Jonny Bowden's Blog about how Omega-3 Fish Oils have been shown to rival the effects of antidepressants.

Imagine if we just ate good food how happy, healthy and pain free we would all be....

And to answer your next question, YES you can get your Omega-3s from Salmon(or most other fish), but make sure it's WILD. The farm raised sounds good, clean and healthy, but it's not!!!Farmed raised fish has more Omega-6 than Omega-3 and as such, will lead to more health problems, not less. This holds true for all fish, not just salmon. Wild is healthy, Farmed is not.

Also, let's remember another good sources of Omega-3: Egg Yolks (there's more in them if they are free roaming-farm raised). Yes, the long time villified Egg Yolk is actually good "Brain Food", "Eye Food" and "Heart Food" because any source of Omega-3 is good for all 3.

So check out Dr. Jonny Bowden's Blog for a quick & interesting read on how a food can rival the effects of a drug.

Healthy Employees = Happy Business, Just Ask Travelocity

Some (smart) very large corporations are taking healthcare back into their own hands. By being proactive, companies like Saber Holdings (Travelocity's parent company) find that by having an "On-Site" chiropractor to help guide their health and wellness program, they are saving $3.00 for every $1.00 they spend on healthcare. Could your company use that kind of savings all while increasing company moral, increasing quality and productivity?

Maybe having a full time on-site chiropractic physician or at least one who comes in to do corporate wellness and health talks a couple times per month can give your company the competitive edge it needs.

Research shows, as do real life examples as shown in the above video, that actively teaching employees to eat better, make healthier life-style choices, engage in regular stretching, yoga, palates, meditation and regular exercise ultimately get more productivity and higher quality work out of their employees.

Enjoy this CNBC Healthy Horizons video and let Travelocity's CEO tell you himself.

Heart Attacks - Heart Disease; More Evidence Highly Refined High Glycemic Index Carbs Are Your Enemy

Well, back to my Mantra, the more man refines foods, the more the foods get screwed up and the more they can screw you up! This is further supported by yet another study, this time it's all the way from Israel.

In a recent study, Dr. Michael Shechter of Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine and the Heart Institute of Sheba Medical Center brings to light that foods like cornflakes, white break, french fries and sweetned soda all lead to heart disease.
"Foods like cornflakes, white bread, french fries, and sweetened soda all put undue stress on our arteries. We've explained for the first time how high glycemic carbs can affect the progression of heart disease."
So, before you reach for your cornflakes or butter up that white bread toast in the morning, read a synopsis of the study by Dr. Jonny Bowden and thing again.
For breakfast, fruit, steel cut oats, natural organic pastured whole eggs and some raw buttered sprouted grain toast is the way to go. At least in my opinion.

Migraine Headache Relief - Can Chiropractic Be Your Answer?

For thos of us that suffer migraines, when they hit it's usually a 2-3-4 or more day ordeal. It was Migraine headaches that brought me to chiropractic when I was 17. After years and years of bewildered physicians, lots of heavy pain medications, it was a chiropractor who finally diagnosed and helped me with my pain.

It had such am amazing effect on my life, I decided to dedicate my life's work to it and that's why today, I am a chiropractic physician.

Enjoy the video...feel free to ask any questions.

Chiropractic for Back Pain - Consumer Reports Says #1 Consumer Choice

Well, it's simply because it works. The reason chiropractic physicians are included in the US Olympic Sports Medicine team is because the Athletes asked for it time and time again. Why? Because it made a cruicial difference in their performance.

80% of the American public has back pain at any given time. Not suprisingly, in a recent consumer reports survey, chiropractic was the #1 choice for consumers suffering from back pain.

Alfalfa Sprouts Might Not Be So Healthy

So I'm reading this book, Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. Subtitled: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats....and I'm learning a lot of great stuff that has again tweaked what I eat and how it's prepared and I come across this...

"There is only one seed we do not recommend in spouted form (or in any form) and that is--suprisingly--alfalfa! After mung beans, alfalfa is the variety of sprout that has caught on in the health food world. Unfortunately, it seems that all the praise heaped on the alfalfa sproud was ill advised. Tests have shown that alfalfa sprouts inhibit the immune system and can contribute to inflammatory arthritis and lupus. Alfalfa seeds contain an amino acid called canavanine that can be toxic to man and animals when taken in quantity. (Cavanine is not found in mature alfalfa plants; it is apparently metabolized during growth)"
This came up in a discussion at one of my favorite sushi restaurants that garnishes their sushi dishes with alfalfa sprouts. I use to eat the sprouts and this time I didn't. So, naturally, I was challenged as to why. I sited the above reference, but the challenge stood. So, here's another reference from a book called How to Poison Your Spouse the Natural Way (which I've just ordered)that also talks about the ills of cavanine and puts more scientific punch behind Sally Fallon's statement.
So, all you fellow health food nuts like me out there, beware of the evil alfalfa sprout. It tastes bad for a reason!

Organic Food is No Healthier Than Conventional Food, Study Finds...

A recent study (publication date is actually today July 29, 2009); says their study finds that organic food is no healthier than conventional food. Here’s why you shouldn’t believe them...

This study seems to be impressive when you first look at the big picture. The American Journal of Nutrition, Published July 2009, lots of references and materials gathered from many studies dating back 50 years. But there’s one problem. They are simply rehashing the studies from years gone by and do not present any actual scientific research. They’ve simply gone back, looked at old published papers on same or similar topics, gathered information and then related the overall findings that fit their criteria. What’s wrong with that?

Well, where’s the actual “recent research” data on the nutritional content of conventional foods that shows how much of a given vitamin, mineral, antioxidant, enzyme, co-factors, pesticide, herbicide or otherwise and compared that to the same in an organically grown food? Answer: There is none.

And, you also can’t just “LUMP” all organic foods into 1 category because, sadly enough, people try to scam us using the organic label just like in any other business. Sure, you can feed a cow organic corn and organic soy and call the cow organically fed cow. But in nature, a cows natural diet is the flowering tops of grasses.

I can feed you organic cardboard boxes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So does eating organic cardboard boxed give you any nutritional advantage over conventional cardboard boxes? No. Why? Because we didn't evolve over hudreds of thosands and millions of years to eat cardboard boxes! It's that simple. Capish?

Then you can raise a cow conventionally and then 3 months prior to slaughter, “finish the cow on grass” and technically you can call it natural grass-fed meat.

You can eat organic cereals, but not be aware that the extremely high heat extrusion process by which most cereals are made and formed into their flakes or other shapes, kills all viable nutrient value. So it doesn't matter what it's made out of if the process kills the nutrients.

Were the organic vegetables studied picked locally after being vine ripened? Or were they picked before they were ripe and then shipped across the country while they rotted to their ripeness rather than “vine ripened”?

How about “Organic Eggs”??? I wrote about this only a few months ago. Most cartons of eggs in a health food store marked “organic” or “natural” are marked “100% organic vegetarian diet” or “fed 100% all roasted organic corn and soy diet”. So what’s the problem? It’s the diet that’s the problem. Hens don’t eat soy or corn in a natural environment. They peck and eat bugs, worms, seeds and whatever else is in those fields they run around in. Why is that a healthy diet for hens? Because it’s what they’ve evolved to eat over hundreds of thousands of years of evolution.

So, to come up with a study that says organic foods have no nutritional advantage over conventionally grown foods only raises more questions rather than providing validation of the farming practices of the American Food Industrial Complex. Hey, and don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with you eating their stuff if you choose. You should just be aware you’re being deceived and understand the alternatives (properly grown organics) have a much greater nutritional value.

You know what you do? Go find a local organic farm and that’s where you buy your eggs, milk, cheese, meats, veggies and fruit. Learn how to make your own condiments (via lactofermentation methods) like your great grandmother did.

And for those who want to find out if organic foods actually have more nutritional benefits than conventional food, you must first really be looking! Try doing some original research next time!

Back Pain & Sitting, It's Bad For Your Back So What Do You Do???

Back Pain Neck Pain Headaches Miami Beach Chiropractor Sports Injury Miami Rotator Cuff Shoulder Pain Plantar Fascitis Car Accident Miami
One of the most common causes is low back pain is the constant and repetitive sitting we do as a society. Besides applying ice and proper lifting techniques, one of the most common pieces of advice I give my patients with Low Back Pain is NOT to sit for more than 20-30 minutes at a time. To set a timer for 20-30 minutes, then get up and give your back a break to relieve it from the constant compression of sitting. All it takes is a quick 2-3 minutes to stand up, walk around, stretch and then you're ready to go again.

What happens is, everyone forgets. They only start to remember when the pain returns. I call pain the great motivator. But, I'm in the business of preventative health. So, I'm pasting in a link to a cool little program. It's called Focus Booster.

It's a pretty quick download and what you get is a timer that will let you set your work time and your break interval. It will chime an alarm when it's time for your break and an alarm when it's time to get back to work. I will be using this to help my low back pain patients remember when to take their stretch break every 20-30 minutes and then take that 2-3 minute break. However, the application was originally designed to help people focus on their work for 25 mintues and take a 5 minute break. This breaks up the monotony of work and allows you to be more focused and more effective by giving you regular relief. To me, this sounded like a great thing for my low back pain patients....

So, without further ado..... Here's the link to the download.

Hope it helps....

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH - A Possible Simple Method To Predict If You're Next

Sudden cardiac death is a major health problem and accounts for between 200,000 and 400,000 deaths every year in the US. Most of us only hear about it when it’s a friend or family member. For us sports physicians and athletic trainers, there’s that 1 in a million that happens on the field of play. The big problem is, the only way to detect these are expensive medical tests. Most or all of which are unfeasible for high school or city league teams or the private individual without health insurance to afford. Maybe, until now.

Most athletes who suffer from Acute Cardiomyopathy just simply drop dead on the field or on the court. It happened to the 17 year old son of one of my patients while his father was watching the game. Ironically and luckily, his father was a semi-retired cardiothoracic surgeon who immediately rushed into action, called 911 and started chest compressions. Ultimately he saved his life. Unfortunately this is not typically the case.

Fewer than 5 per cent of people who experience this combination of heart events are successfully resuscitated, which is why finding out who might be at risk within the general population is a major public health challenge.

The problem lies in the fact that unless mom, dad, grandma or grandpa were athletes and stressed their system to the max, there’s almost no way to tell if you are at risk of sudden cardiac death. A typical patient history, stethoscopic examination of the heart and even EKG won’t reveal the defect. Cardiac ultrasound is typically the only way to detect the underlying defect which is often only trigger with intense athletic activity.

However a recent study may have discovered a simple test to more accurately (and less expensively) identify people at risk for sudden cardiac death. Click here to read more about the study.

While this may be more telling for sudden cardiac death in the general population, it will be interesting to see where this goes for the predictiono of Acute Cardiomyopathy in athletes. As sports physicians often working on the field with athletes pushing themselves to the max, a simple evaluation to screen for this problem would a very welcomed tool.

This blog post is dedicated to the memory of my cousin Michelle Jodi Narson who died only a few years ago at the age of 33 from a sudden cardiac death event and to her mom Renee, father Ricky and younger brother Lonny who still live with broken hearts...

A Better Back: 8 hours of ice therapy or 3 hours of moist heat therapy right at your desk!

Patient compliance. Can be a big a problem for a physician, trainer or therapist. I’m sure ALL of my doctor and therapist friends out there can Identify with this:

Doctor: Based on my examination findings, you’re
going to have to apply (ice compresses –or- moist heat) to your back and neck to
help reduce spasms, inflammation and pain. You’ll need to do this 15-20 minutes
at least 3 times per day for the next 2 weeks…

Patient: But..but I have to work, I don’t have
time or have a way to use (ice or heat) at work. I won’t be able to do that.

Doctor: Well, that’s my recommendation, and it's your body. You’re going to need to find a way. Isn’t there a lunch room at work where you can keep an ice pack?

It’s a constant battle for a doctor or therapist to get a patient to comply with some simple home instructions like applying ice or heat to help them get better. Until now, you had to rely on the freezer or microwave at work…IF there actually is one. But now, thanks to A Better Back, you can have an amazing ice pack that will last 6-8 hours or moist heating pad that will last up to 3 hours in your office to help sooth your aches and pains. All packaged nicely in a sharp looking comfortable ultra suede microfiber back pack.

When I first saw this and realized that I could have 8 hours of ice available WITHOUT A FREEZER, I was amazed. I mean, think of all the uses for this. Especially for athletes or anyone who does physical labor out in the Hot Florida Sun!!! I bike for 1-2 hours on Saturday and/or Sunday. With this ice pack I can go for an extended bike ride and keep relatively cool. For those who work in the cold, imagine strapping on a heating pad that keeps your warm for 2-3 hours at a time.
No more can patients tell us that they can’t apply ice or heat to their conditions because they are at work all day or they’re going on a long road trip. A Better Back changed the game and made a nice, convenient way for our patients to apply ice and heat throughout the day without having to immediately recharge the ice or heat right after use.

Freeze the ice pack and you have 6-8 hours of cold. Microwave the hot pack for just 3 minutes and you get 3 hours of moist heat. Now, I'm no Billy Mays, but if you have aches and pains and your doctor or therapist told you to apply ice or apply heat...You need A Better Back. You can visit their web site, and check it out for yourself…

Happiness: 3 amazing tips from the world's oldest case study

This could be one of the most important blogs I've posted yet...and, that's all it is, a post. I'm not writing this one, just leading you to a great short internet article that says it all. It's not about sports medicine or rehab or nutrition, it's about life...And you need to read it.

Whatever we do, wherever we've been or wherever we think we're going in our lives, the one thing we all want is Happiness. Whether it's achieving your goal weight, enjoying a party, going on a vacation, choosing your career, playing with your kids or grandkids, choosing your soul mate or whatever, ultimately it all boils down to happiness. So, how do we have a happy life? what are the keys? what are the secrets?

Well, they're quite simple. And...David Romanelli sums it up nicely in just a few short paragraphs in his brief report on a 72-year old study on happiness.

Before you do anything else today, just read it.

Read it now.

Maybe it teaches you the keys to happiness..

Maybe it saves your life....
